One week later - another Remeron question.

Ok so last week I slipped back into some pretty bad anxiety and a new bout of insomnia after getting sick and dealing with Crohn's issues all at once. Started 15mg Remeron (mirtazapine) last Thursday, it knocked me out and I was pretty groggy into the next day. That got better over the last 7 days.

Yesterday I was pretty stressed out, took a .5mg of Xanax in the afternoon and my Remeron about 10pm and went to go to sleep. I know I was up at least another hour. It was like my brain didn't want to shut down I know I tossed a couple of times but apparently I did sleep since my wife heard me snoring the times she woke up, I'm guessing my dreams were very vivid, to the point that it felt like I was awake. I woke up not tired at all, which is a little weird for me... I guess that means the med worked but I'm a little anxious. It felt to me like I was never asleep, my wife knows I was asleep, my body doesn't feel tired.

I plan on calling my Psych today, I have not seen him yet as it is a new doctor but I don't want this med to be failing me so soon. I've never had a problem getting to sleep before and I don't want to add that to my list.

Anyone else have a similar experience, where the med "felt" like it stopped working that fast?

Sorry to hear you are having insomnia I can relate to how you must be feeling as I also have bad insomnia. I also take 15mg Mirtazapine and find that to be helpful in regards to getting me to sleep but I still wake up during the night.

I would suggest you go and speak with your doctor regarding this issue.

Side effects of Remeron may include very weird vivid dreams, feeling exhausted, confused, dizziness, vertigo and increased appetite. I have read that the vivid dreams may stop after your body becomes use to the medication.

Most of the patient comments state they either love the medication - that it gave them their life back or they could not tolerate the side effects.

Like most of the medications, each person reacts to the same medication in their own unique way.

Very true, I hate starting new meds after my run in with Imuran for my Crohns almost killed me. That certainly doesn't help a guy manage anxiety with meds.

I left a message for the nurse, but I haven't seen this Psychiatrist yet (I go on the 10th), and he didn't prescribe the med, so I'm not sure what they'll say.

In the meantime I'm just going to soldier on.

When you have a life threatening reaction to a medication, it truly makes you shy away from taking medications. My husband had a severe reaction to a medication he was taking for his Crohn's and arthritis which landed him in the hospital with bilateral pneumonia and heart failure.

Have found Mirtazapine has worked very well for me with sleeping. Was switched to this after fluoxetine had me waking 2am in the morning with major anxiety symptoms. Started CPAP treatment a few months back for sleep apnea and have taken to it with no probs; getting good sleep has been a godsend.

The mirtazapine has probably worked wonders with depression, and for the first couple of months was great on the anxiety front but have been finding it less effective with the daytime anxiety.
