Nervous about blood test tomorrow

Hi guys,

I'm going tomorrow morning to have the lactose tolerance blood test done. I'm aware that it's three hours long but has anyone else done it that could tell me a little more about it?

I have a huge fear of throwing up and I'm afraid that the stuff they make you drink is gonna make me sick if I am lactose intolerant. But eating dairy, I was never sick like that. Could the stuff they make you drink make you sick? I'm just nervous. Thanks!

Hi Srg.

I don't like medical tests either...believe me...but I find that the actual event is much easier than what my anxiety and imagination usually put me through!

I have not had the lactose test...but I did have to do the three hour glucose test once when I was pregnant.

It was not enjoyable, I'll be honest. The stuff that I had to drink wasn't pleasant, but it wasn't awful either. I did not feel sick to my stomach at all.

Of course, this is different, since they are purposely giving you something to test for your gastric reaction...

...however, like you said, you neve were sick to your stomach with dairy. Maybe the worse you can expect is some bloating/discomfort from gas (common lactose intolerance response)

I am sure that all will go well, and you will be fine throughout the test.

Thanks for that post SC, I read it several times before going in for my blood work to calm myself down :)

Just got home. Boy, was that brutal. The stuff I had to drink was citrus flavored but of course, didn't taste anything like citrus lol. It was so grainy and gross and there was so much of it. Within 30 minutes I was in the bathroom having a bowel movement. Not diarrhea, just kind of a loose and softer stool. It could've just been a coincidence that I had to go to the bathroom but this freaked me out and my anxiety started getting the better of me. I was literally asking the phlebotomist if I could go home lol! My mom was with me and she was great support. Her and the phlebotomist both told me to stay strong and push through it.

I had to get blood drawn 5 different times, my arms a little sore but I am so glad that it's over with :) just hoping for good results now!

Great job!!! You did it, and now it is over, and you can relax.:)

I am proud of you for getting it done...and not running out the back door and back home, Lol!! ;p

I too hope for good results. Hopefully this will give you direction on how to proceed with treating your stomach issues. Let us know when you get the results of your test.

Keep up the coping skills for anxiety management as well!
