Welcome to the forum! You are among people who truly care about
your recovery and will be here for your support 24/7!
Happy birthday to your daughter! The big 13, such a good age! You said that she had OCD when she was younger and she was able to overcome this disorder. Congrats to her! She must be a very strong willed little girl.
As for you, I know exactly how you feel and what you are going through. I own a business and I think the stresses of each work day built and built, leaving me totally crippled with stress and anxiety. I experience very real and scary chest pains.
You said you have an appointment at the Mayo Clinic in the near future... What kind of tests are they going to run? One of your main initiatives for that visit is to get cleared from any medical condition (cardiac or other) you may have so you can focus soley on treating your anxiety.
You have received very good advice above from TMA, Mont and SC. It's so important that you don't forget to check out the coping techniques on our resource page as it teaches several different exercises we can do to better cope with this disorder. The deep breathing exercises seem to work for me the best. I employ this throughout the day and it seems to really help me manage my anxiety.
I noticed that you said that you are taking xanax at the lowest dose and that it doesn't do much to help you. Have you ever thought about
talking with your doctor about
increasing your dose to a more effective level? Alot of people on here find alot of releif from taking xanax. However, there are those who are scared of benzos but if you listen to your doctor and take it exactly as prescribed then you will be just fine. Just something to think about
. : )
And to finally answer your question. Yes, you can overcome this just as your daughter did! Keep in mind that this will be a journey of highs and lows. Some days will seem imbearable. Continue talking with your doctors so you can find the medication that is right for you. Educate yourself with this disorder. Seek and find the coping skills that work best for you and practice them daily. Come on here at least once a day and receive AND give encouragement. If you practice everything I just mentioned you will notice that little by little you will start to feel better and one day you will wake up and realize that the good days outnumber the bad! This may be something you will have to fight all of your life but that doesn't mean you can't have a normal, healthy, happy life. You CAN overcome this, you really can!
Keep us posted!
God bless!
