Phycologist Appt. Tomorrow

I have my first ever physcologist appointment tomorrow, I'm not really sure what to expect. Any advice for the first appt.? What can I expect?

A psychologist does therapy/counseling. Is that what you're seeing them for? (Psychiatrists are medical doctors that prescribe medications). Just making clear you're seeing a psychologist for therapy?

Regardless of who it is or why you're seeing them, make a list of things that are bothering you & what you want to work on. Make a bullet pointed list of everything- anxiety, depression, want coping skills, etc. it'll be so much easier to have a list in case you forget.

Let us know how it goes. You'll be just fine and this is a great step to your healing!

How exciting! The first appointment is usually used to get to know each other. Like sweet said, take a list of questions for them. They will probably ask you what you want to get out of therapy. You will probably know within the first few visits if this therapist is a good fit for you.
I actually start with a new therapist today. My first (and only) therapist is retiring this month so in switching over to someone else in the office.

My current therapist (not a psychologist, although I've been to them as well as psychiatrists) had a basic meet & greet type of first visit. In fact, most providers will tend to follow along this path as well. No cage rattling or anything, just a getting to know you.

Remember, you're there to get an idea if *you* think this is a good fit too! :)

Thank you all for your encouraging words, your advice and support. Overall the appointment went pretty well. He's very nice and made me feel at ease.
He said that do to my personality and family history of depression/anxiety, I am more likely to experience anxiety and that I need to open up more about my feelings with family instead of keeping everything inside all the time which is difficult for me.

Well you have come to the right place then! You can certainly vent in this forum anytime. I can't tell you what a difference it has made for me...simply being able to come here and 'talk' about whatever is bothering me.

Conversely, sharing victories and helping others along the journey is also key! So stick around, and keep contributing if you find it helpful.:)

I am glad that you liked your psychologist...and great job of getting going with your therapy! I know it will benefit you greatly.:)
