I was prescribed xanax today for use as needed, but I've got some questions that I'm looking to get answered by someone who has experience. My most disturbing anxiety symptom is dp and I'm a bit worried that Xanax might make it worse. I'm also curious about
the effects in the morning when taking it at night. I'vm not big on taking pills, so this is a scary thing for me!

I've been taking Xanax on and off for many, many years and find it the best anti-anxiety drug for me. I find it just calms me down considerably and I have no side affects when I've gone off of it. I used to just take a very small dose (.25) in the morning when I'm always a bit anxious but recently someone on this site said that is an incredibly low dose and may not do much for me. So since I have been going through a particularly bad bout of anxiety, I went up to twice (sometimes three) times a day and take 2/3 a pill or even a whole pill each time (.5) because I want to do this slowly myself to see what works best. So far, It's made a big difference in my anxiety level by increasing the dosage and that was the dose the doc originally prescribed for me anyway. If my anxiety continues to lower, I will also lower the dose again but someone said recently that their doctor suggested you should take a regular dose three times a day while you are having severe anxiety because it's better to have a regular amount in your system to try and stay anxiety free and not going up and down with your anxiety. If you're nervous, start by taking a small dose (maybe half a pill), and go up from there if you feel comfortable with that. How many mgs does he su sggest? Frankly, I feel Xanax is a great med for me and I hope it does you some good also. I have noticed that many people on this site have said that Xanax helps them alot. Let us know how you are doing with it. Don't be afraid of it, it's a very mild drug if taken correctly and won't make you feel like a zombie.

...by the way, if dp means depersonalization, I have had that many times and it does seem to help with that. If you mean depression, my anxiety causes my depression so when my anxiety level is lower, so is my depression. I was diagnosed with anxious depression many years ago so it makes sense. And I do not take an anti-depressant as I'm somewhat afraid of those.

I was taking .25 xanax before and after the depersonalization/derealization & I never associated it with either. It simply helped calm my nerves. I also never felt "drunk" or out of it taking xanax, either at the time or the next day after taking it at night. I now only take .25mg as needed which I've only taken twice in 2 months.
Hope this helps you!
Sending peace-
Lisa

My suggested dose is .5 mg, but I think I will cut it in half until I know how it affects me. Thanks for the input, feeling less afraid :)

.50 is a common dose but just snap that sucker in half and take as precribed!

I also use xanax when needed for anxiety - especially for when I feel DP. I'm sure everyone is different and there may be some people xanax doesn't work for at all or for whom it may agitate their symptoms, but for me it usually works. I have not had a "bad" reaction to it so far. I am prescribed .5 mg and I usually break the pill in half (a whole pill puts me right to sleep).
