I am feeling better (not completely) but getting there since I started my prozac 3 weeks ago. I am slowly getting out of the house after being inside for months. I'll go for car rides or go to my brothers house for the day. My question is how do I move on to other things? I still can't go into a store or drive my car. Will the medicine eventually help with this or will I have to really work at this? I've never gotten this bad before where I wouldn't drive or go to stores. Sometimes I would get anxious doing it but I still managed. My daughter asks me everyday if I'll take her somewhere tomorrow and I always say we'll see, knowing that I can't do it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi Bambi Bear
I am pleased to read you are feeling a little better that is good news just take things at one small step at a time. It can take 6-8 weeks before you will see the full benefit of your Prozac so stick with it and you should see improvements but medication will only help with the symptoms so it is best to do some type of talking therapy alongside your medication such as CBT which has great results in treating people with anxiety your doctor will know all about
CBT so ask them the next time you see them or check out www.moodgym.com.

Bb.,
First off...don't discount the amazing prgress that you have made so far! From being shut in for months...to now going out in the car and visiting family...that is HUGE!
You will move forward in stages as you continue to benefit from your Rx and gain recovery.
However, as Hibee mentioned...medication is only part of the equation. I can't remember if you mentioned going or getting set up with therapy?
If this is in the works...great! If not, I recommend looking into it ASAP.
Many people find the combination of therapy and meds to be a winning one!
Keep up the good work...and keep us posted!

Wonderful!! This too takes time however...be patient with yourself and the process.
You can enhance what you are learning through therapy with self-help.
I found the material here in our Resources to be really helpful...along with books that I checked out from the library, or purchased at the bookstore or on-line.:)
We are cheering you on!

I actually just bought 2 books to help me. The first one is Battlefield of the mind by Joyce Meyer and the other is The Anxiety Cure by Robert DuPont and family.

Well shucks,....I'm on Prozac and in Therapy too! And I'm here to tell you from experience....ALL the advice you received above is perfectly wonderful and accurate!
It slips and slides the first few weeks as we get used to it, we need to give it 6-8 weeks to really notice the full therapeutic effects, and hands-down, combining meds with therapy and self-help coping skills is the most effective 3-pronged approach ever! I've come quite a ways.
I'm still a bit of a shut-in and don't like going out, so again I can relate to your situation. But,...I've come so far, by the sounds of it, so have you. Already even!! Kudos!!

Bambi-
I had the driving fear/going to stores phobia before myself. It got better with time. It wasn't even that much time, but I'd say a month or 2 after starting my medication (which incidentally was Prozac lol. That was 20+ yrs ago). Once you start to feel better, you'll get more confidence and feel more like your "old self", and doing things again will come naturally.
We do have to gently push ourselves a bit sometimes though but move with baby steps for now. Do your best for any particular day- that's all we can do. I believe in you that you will get through this struggle and likely sooner than later :)
Peace-

I agree with Lisa about
the pushing yourself. That has made all the difference in the world for me. If I hadn't gone back to work I think I would have driven myself crazy by now. I also just made myself go places. I was scared to the point of shaking sometimes but I just did it. There were times I didn't have a choice and I think that made a difference. All of those little steps I took made the next thing even easier. For me the more I am home and and in quiet the worse I am. You may find that you are the same way once you are able to venture out more.
