Really bad cold and fast heart rate

I've had a cold since last week and in the past few days, it's gotten worse. My fever hasn't gone above 100.6. In the past 2 days, I've had a lot of head congestion/headaches, achyness, and have been blowing my nose nonstop. Also I've noticed my heart rate is faster than normal. It's usually in the 60's to low 70's, but lately it's been in the 80's, low 90's. Is this normal for just a cold?

I am not a physician but I can offer you two pieces of information: the first is that if you are anxious at all about being unwell then your heart rate can increase as you perhaps have experienced before. Secondly, a fever can also cause an increase your heart rate as well as other symptoms such as chills or a feeling of being cold, shivering and stiff muscles (aches) - the physiology of this is moderately complicated but is available for you to learn about should you feel it necessary. There are so many variations on the common cold virus that in fact science has given up counting and labelling them. Rest, rehydrate and paracetamol will bring down your temperature. If you really aren't happy and you are not feeling better soon then of course you can and should seek professional medical reassurance.

Hello, I'm not a dr but I do know that heart rates go up when your body is fighting off an infection!! I hope you feel better!!!

Hey there,

These cold viruses nowadays seem to be a LOT more damaging than they used to be. Probably nothing to be concerned about. Lots of rest, lots of fluids, and make sure to get some soup if you can. Soup always tastes better when you have a cold.... :)

Thank you all. I'm definitely getting lots of fluids, but not much rest. The past two nights I've been awake in the middle of the night for like 3-4 hours. And as much as I try to nap during the day, I can't. Yesterday I did for a little longer than today, which was only about 20 minutes. I just took some nighttime cold medicine and Im hoping it helps me sleep. Of course my whole left side feels most achy. Ughhhh. Why do I feel all the things all the time!

Yes, being ill just about always finds me with an elevated heart rate as well. Being ill is taxing on our bodies...and of course as anxiety prone people...we focus in on these changes.

Many OTC cold medicines are also of a stimulating nature, so you will want to note if are affecting you, or making the issue worse.
