Ok, my 2 year old's language development is sky rocketing right now. If we say it, so can he. Well the past 2 days he's been saying his back hurts and touching his lower back. My husband sometimes has back pain but I don't recall if he's said it recently. My son is acting totally fine. I can't decide if I should call a patient educator at our pediatrician or if I should ignore this. Could he even know what it means to say his back hurts? He had a physical on Friday but hadnt said this before. Ugh. Am I the crazy mom if I call the ped, or is it better to be safe than sorry??

Hi Park12

You are not a crazy mum atoll you are just concerned about your child I would say it is definitely worth while phoning your doctor and seeing what they say like you say it is better to be safe than sorry.

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks you guys. He's not acting like he's in any pain. He's actually acting like a wild man and has no fever. I think I'll just call the patient educator tomorrow and see what they say. I have a feeling he's copying something he's seen/heard, but I don't wanna worry about it.

Kids...sooooo tricky when it comes to knowing the right steps to take with their health decisions. I can really only tell you what I would personally do.

Well..... I wouldn't call if my son said something like this unless he was saying it consistently for a week or so, or if he was displaying other symptoms. However, when my anxiety was super high, I called for EVERYTHING. I am pretty sure my pediatrician heard from me 3-5 times a week right after the birth of my daughter...... Nothing ever turned out to be wrong, except for my stress levels.

The only other advice I have here is just to observe him. Is he playing normally and bending down and getting toys from the ground without a problem? Does he look as though he is having any pain?

Ok, that's the best I've got for now! We're heading out, so I have to JET!~!! :D

Thanks TMA! He is acting totally fine and running around and being crazy. I imagine the P.E. will tell me to call back in a week or so if it keeps up. It's only been two days, but I'm feeling anxious so I think I'm gonna call just so she can tell me to calm down. I have so much going on right now that I don't think I'll relax otherwise.

It could have even been something he saw on t.v., or maybe some other source (book, radio, another person?)...like you said, it only takes once and the little 'parrots' have it down!

I wouldn't worry, and just call tomorrow for peace of mind.

I found it interesting that he only said it when he wanted us to come get him from his crib and then it was never mentioned again. He played hard yesterday.

Toddlers....sneaky little devils. At least mine seems to be!

I talked to the nurse and she said to see if he keeps saying it and watch him for a week and just keep and eye on urine and temp because they do see kidney infections in kids his age, but that he's likely mimicking something he heard.

My 2yr old always says her hip hurts, but we both know it's because I just had a total hip replacement and since before she was born I've been complaining about my hip, so it's definitely something she got from me. But she does complain sometimes that her toe or foot hurts and I think she might have done something to it but it's not a big problem....yet. I hope he's just mimicking u.

Before you know it...he'll be claiming his Sciatica is acting up when he wants you to pick him up or fetch him something, LOL!!

I am glad that the nurse mentioned monitoring urine output and temp...I did not want to mention this and worry you...but that crossed my mind as well...highly unlikely, but good to keep an eye on just the same since he indicated that area in the lower back.

I am still pretty sure he is just parroting what he heard along the way somewhere though.;p Especially since all indications otherwise show that he is feeling fine!

I actually notice how very wet his last diaper was and no blood in the urine and definitely no fever. Little faker! Just trying to stress me out! :-)
