I went to my doctor today because of my sinuses and my anxiety has been horrible this week, shes sure it's all anxiety causing my symptoms but ordered a CBC and I'm freaking out, I hate tests of any kind. What is the worst that they will tell me??

Don't panic! If you went for your sinuses she is probably just checking to see if you're white blood cells are elevated at all which would maybe indicate a sinus infection and then she would just put you on some antibiotics! No biggie! Hugs! Tests always stress me out too!

A cbc will just measure your red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets (parts that clot your blood). It can be done to measure any one of those. I would imagine, since your doctor suspects a sinus infection, she wants to see how your immune system is responding. White blood cells will show if you have an infection. I know you're worried, but it is a very routine and nothing to worry about. Thinking of you!

Don't let yourself do that. If you went in for sinuses, then she's probably just being thorough because she knows you're anxious about it and she's just checking to see if your body is fighting an infection before she goes and puts you on an antibiotic for no reason. That's a great doctor if you ask me, since she's actually checking you without prescribing the medication unnecessarily. If you think it would make you feel better, call your doctor's office, ask for a return call and ask her specifically what she's looking for by running the test. Maybe it will ease your nerves to hear from her.

She ruled out sinus infection right away and is checking other things she said.

I would give the office a call and ask for a call back. Since we weren't at your appointment it's hard to say what she may be doing. MissGigi is right though about the things she's looking for so if it's not a sinus infection maybe she's just looking to see if you're fighting off something else.

That you have a low count of one of those things, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. What symptoms did you tell your doctor you're having?

If you've never had a CBC it is routine after about age 30 or so? I remember being a little shocked the first time my doctor ordered on with my regular check up.

I was confused, and said so, since I wasn't sick. He explained that every one of his patients gets a complete blood count with their physicals.

Routine...completely normal...and if this is your first, I am sure your doctor is just giving you one now because you are overdue.:)

...oh and b/c of the dizziness/feeling faint they are likely just checking your iron levels (hemaglobin)

Deb, I want to encourage you to try to use all your coping skills on this one. You are more than like A-Ok! I cannot even count how many CBC's I've had in the past 6 months. Just a random one here and there for doctors visits. My results sometimes vary and even worry me a smidge now and then, but ultimately I'm fine and I believe you will be too.

I don't know if you're on meds at all, but maybe if you have a benzo, you can take it and it'll help calm your nerves a little bit.

Do you mind if I ask what the symptoms were that brought you to the doctor to begin with?

Faint feeling anxiety, head pressure overall unwell.

Well then it makes sense that she's just checking things out, but my guess is that she's just being safe so she can confirm anxiety symptims!

Honestly I couldn't say, since I'm not a doctor. I assume that if your levels were very off, she would order more tests. The CBC isn't diagnostic really. It would indicate if things were off though, but like I said, I would guess that yours will come back clear! My sister had a CBC that showed low iron because she felt unwell and worn down and she's just on an iron supplement now. No biggie!

Yeah, my guess would be to determine if you are low in iron since you mentioned feeling faint. If that is the case, more iron. No biggie!
