How many are on Medication and have still have a occasional drink?

I have had alot of time to myself and have been doing some research today. First off I want to clarify that I am not referring to taking medication at the same time as drinking. I am talking about taking it as the doctor prescribes it .

Do you drink if taking a anti depressant? I am not talking about get belligerent drunk everyday. This has been the only thing holding me back because I do want to take my Lexapro(generic). I just do not want to take it when I know I drink as well from time to time.

It is a interesting concept (being the opinions of people when combing medication with any alcohol) and goes to show you everyone has a different opinion on drinking while on medication. I was reading my Vyvanse interaction label from CVS pharmacy in which you know is one of the most popular pharmacies and most trusted in the Country and it states to "drink alcohol in moderation". But if you google if you can drink while on Vyvanse you will get posts stating it is a death sentence and etc.. I just find it fascinating how there are so many viewpoints on everything.

What is the real danger of drinking while on a anti depressant? The way it functions in the brain for the 2-8 hours or whatever it is that the Alcohol is in your system?

alcohol is a depressant. lexapro an anti-depressant. if you read the sheet, if it has one it will say it will increase the effects of alcohol. keep this in mind.

This is a topic that comes up regular on the forum and your right people have different opinions on it.

My view is that an occasional drink is not going to do you much harm by that I mean a small glass of wine or a small beer.

When I started on antidepressants I had a drink problem and was drinking most days and found that this had a very negative effect on my mental health and made me even more depressed and the amount of alcohol I was consuming was not mixing well with the medication and I had all sorts of problems. I was going through therapy at the time and released that I was not doing myself any favours drinking whilst taking antidepressants mainly because the alcohol was cancelling out the benefits of the antidepressants I was on and I would feel severely ill for days after drinking so knocked it all on the head and stopped drinking.

I completely stopped drinking in 2006 and did not touch a drop for a couple of years and felt much better for it and my mental health got a lot better. Over the last couple of years I have had the occasional drink but never have more than 2/3 drinks and have found that I have been fine. I spoke this through with my psychiatrist and he was fine with me doing that as it is only very occasionally by that I mean once a month and the majority of time I don't drink it tends to be on special occasions such as a birthday or new years eve etc etc.

HT is right alcohol is a depressant so if you are suffering with depression it is not advisable to drink alcohol and it does not mix well with antidepressants so it is best to avoid alcohol whilst on antidepressants.
