Actually thoughts and not being able to avoid them was the subject of my therapy session this week.
My therapist basically said "don't try to avoid thoughts, it's useless. You can never do that. But instead, take your mind to a journey where you can still have the thoughts but not letting them take control. This is what Mindfulness and Meditation is..."
I really plan to learn meditation also. But just don't know where to start.
