watching a tree grows in brooklyn

I have this movie on
It's another movie about a strong woman who has to be practical and hardworking and is looked down on as being unfeeling because she has to choose between surviving and making tough decisions based on her gut and knowledge. They are not popular ones and there is a soft one in the picture that looks like a hero despite the fact that as fun loving, true loving and full of dreams as they are...things would crumble if they were in charge.
Does anyone relate?
