Starting Lexapro, how to deal with negative reviews?

Hello All,

I have finally started my generic Lexapro . I have been on 10 mg sense last Sunday. My doctor wants me to work up to 30mg. I think that is alot. He is a GP and I have been going to him for about a year and a half. All the things I have looked up is saying 20mg is the maximum dose to take. I am a bigger guy but I don't know 30 mg at one time seems alot.

I want to say it is working so far. I plan to increase my dosage another 5-10mg on Sunday and cap it off at 20mg.

For those that have taken anti depressants how do you deal with all the negative things and reviews you read online? What I mean is, it seems like everyone always says how bad these medicines (Anti Depressants) are and how much they mess with you. This was my fear for a year and a half and that is why I have just now started it. The anxiety was getting out of control with my life so this was a last resort.

Welcome Humble59, I pretty much need to ignore the negative. I do read side effects just so I'm aware of anything that might happen. However, I have taken some kind of AD for over 30 years and I've yet to get any bad side effects, other then the common ones. Just read things with a grain of salt. The good news is I have heard excellent things about lexapro here on the forums, alot of people here take it and it seems to work well for most of them.

As far as going up to 30mg, that is YOUR choice. If you hit 20mg and it seems to be working, then stick with 20. Just because your doctor recommends 30mg doesn't mean you need to go that high if it is otherwise working for you. I'm happy to hear that so far it is.

Hi Humble and welcome!

Good job on getting started on treatment, managing your anxiety, and feeling your best!

I hope that you continue to do well on your new Rx. I think if you are comfortable with making 20 mg. your max goal, then simply explain what you have here to your doctor...as this is ultimatley your decision.:)

As far as reviews go...always remember that people are much more motivated and apt to post negative responses than neutral or positive ones!

For every negative review you read...there are dozens of unwritten ones from people who are doing fine with their Rx's...or even really love them...they just aren't as likely to write about it as someone who had a rough experience.

Welcome to the forum.

Well done on going to your doctor and asking for help that is the first step towards recovery. We all react different to antidepressants and what works well for one person may not work as well for an other. I used to take Lexapro and found it to be a good medication and I did not get any side effects after the initial start up but my understanding was that 20mg was the max dose.

It is normal to experience side effects at the beginning but these usually pass after a couple of weeks so stick with it and if things don't start to improve go back and speak with your doctor. Also look into therapy such as CBT as it is that which will really make a difference with your anxiety.

welcome from me. trial and error. i affirm in the positive with this med. 20mg i find is good efficacy. many healing thoughts. disregard labels. i have chronic health issues. according to the meds i take, with combos that don't go, should not take with this or that or if you have this or that, seriously i would be a freakin' mess. your pharmacist are all over this stuff. stick with one. if i listened to the labels on all my meds, i would not be alive for not taking them!!! (seriously) take care and fear not. many healing thoughts.

Welcome to the forum.I took Lexapro for 10 days in 2013 after trying Wellbutrin and Celaxa.I started taking AD in June 2013 and in Sept .my doc put me on Lexapro .I was just starting to learn about depression and the AD s so after 10 days i felt nothing so i went back to Celaxa because at least i felt it worked a little.It s long story but after being on Celexa for 5 months(it crashed),i was put on Pristiq , Paxil , Cymbalta and after going through all of this my Doc (here in Florida) wanted me to try Fetxima and gave me 3 weeks of samples.I told him that Pristiq and Cymbalta ( which did not work) were in the same family as Fetxima so why should i try it.He said it might work.After trying all of these AD s i now have more experience and saw that the only one that i had not given a fair chance was Lexapro (escitalopram generic in Canada ).The Doc gave me a prescription for Lexapro (20mg) and i have enough to get me back to Canada where i will meet my regular GP at the end of April.I started the Lexapro (20 mg) on March 18 and as of today i have been on it 18 days .So far it has not helped me but i have no choice and will stay on it . I will be able to see a psychiatrist in May and they are supposed to have more experience and should be able to help. For what it s worth ,do not let the negative or positive info that you read on this forum influence you.Paxil is the only AD that worked for 10 months ,yet it really gets a bad rap .Cymbalta was the best one(was on it for 3 months) i had as far as working on the depression but nobody can survive on 2-3 hours of sleep per night(that was in my case).We are all different and after a while you get to know your bodies reaction to meds much faster.Good luck .

Thank you for your post Humble59. I am also new to this form. I've started taking Lexapro a little less than a month ago. I too was concerned at the side effects. I am new to medication in general. Other than having to take antibiotics I have not had to take any medication for an extended period. The way I look at it is pretty much every medication has side effects and some of them can be a little scary. From what I am ready and from what my doctor said, Lexapro is one of the cleaner meds. I wish you the best of luck.

I've been on lexapro since November and there were some mild side effects at first but I'd rather deal with them than deal with constant anxiety.
