Drinking moderately on medication

I have been doing alot of research on this and it is interesting to say the least . It is commonly noted that people on a anti depressant should not drink . Because of the (anti) in the medication and the depressant in the alcohol. I also say another study that said although they are not recommended, their is a lack of study to see that the effects of the two together are truly harmful. It is stated that it is most likely to give you increased side effects if anything.

I am taking generic lexapro 10mg and have been on it for over a week and I have to say it seems to help. I am going to bump up to 20mg once it gets to two weeks. But i do not know that I want to give up the right to drink for the rest of time I am on this based on assumptions as opposed to scientific studies in which there seems to be a serious lack of. I know everyone reacts differently. I know I was on venlafaxine and I have to say that drug in particular seems to be a last resort as far as AD's go. I drank on it and seemed to be fine . The effects were just a little more pronounced.

I am asking for real life experiences if you have the time to provide any. Not a generic anwser that google provides.

I admit that I have drank while taking an AD and did just fine, although I don't drink anymore and haven't had a drop in over 3 years. I have in the past drank while taking anti-depressants. I've heard others say there doctor said it was okay if it was very moderate, like a beer or 2 at a time and not everyday, but again You should talk to your doctor and see what he/she says.

Humble i can honestly say i never drank moderately, i know for sure it messes up Benzos, Peace

I have occasionally had a couple of drinks while on ADs and did not have any trouble, but it makes sense to me that it would decrease the efficacy of your medication and increase your depression/anxiety.

Hi

This is a topic that we get quite a lot on the forum and always gets varied answers.

I have drank heavily on AD and had horrendous hangovers sometimes lasting for 3 days and it also made my depression worse so I pretty much stopped. I have the occasional drink but never go over the top with it as for me it's not worth the after effects.

Myself and plenty of other people I knew/know drank heavily on antidepressants (college years). It doesn't pose the same danger as drinking on other classes of drugs, such as benzos. That being said, it's my understanding that none of us really had any improvements in our depression in doing that.

If it's going to be bum you out not to be able to have a drink or two with friends from time to time, I'd say test it out- but do keep it to drink a two.

my brother drinks fairly heavy and while he was on paxil it seems to make it not work . he still drinks and is on something else now .
