I have been off my meds for 3 weeks and 2 days. With doctors approval I quit cold turkey. The meds made me feel worse than before I started. I started to feel disconnected from my surroundings and it terrified me. I guess this is called de personalisation? Well 3 weeks of being off meds I STILL feel like this. I thought it was the meds making me feel like that, but now that I'm off them I'm starting to think something is seriously wrong with my head. I keep going back and forth on whether or not I should start my meds again. This feeling comes in the evening's and lasts util I eventually fall asleep. Every single day. I don't know what to do. I called My doctor and scheduled an appointment but I can't get in until June 1. :(

Sorry to hear you are having these symptoms it does sound like you are having some depersonalisation which is caused by high levels of anxiety. It is not best practice to quit cold and you may be experiencing some withdrawal effects but these should pass.

I am pleased you have made an appointment with your doctor I would let them know how you are feeling and and see what they suggest. Medications will only help ease your symptoms so the best way to treat your anxiety is by doing some type of talking therapy such as CBT or Mindfulness Meditation.

Seeing as you have a while to wait until you see the doctor I would suggest that you have a look at our resources thread which is on the main page for some useful links to self help guides. Also look at www.moodgym.com which is a free online CBT programme and look for some Mindfulness videos on youtube there is a lot to choose from.

Welcome Wonderful Life, I'm happy you found us, this is an awesome community that cares and above all else understands what you are going thru with anxiety.

I agree with Hibee, and it sounds like depersonalization, there is a link about it in our resource thread on the top of the page. Are you in any type of therapy? I highly recommend some type of CBT or mindfulness therapy as it helps with the anxiety. There is also a 3 minute mindfulness video in our resources take a look and watch it. I find mindfulness a great tool on getting back to the here and now and getting out of the anxiety attack.

Unfortunately, A/D meds can initially increase the anxiety symptoms...before helping to relieve them...ironic, right?

So if you had depersonalization as an anxiety symptom...perhaps it wasn't even that noticable before starting your Rx...

...then it easily could have become more pronounced once you got on your prescription. ;/

Of course, not all meds are for everyone...and this could have been a s/e that would not happen with another choice of SSRI for you, so talking with your doctor about options at your upcoming appointment will be a good step.
