Lexapro and beer

Anyone here know if its ok to have 2-3 beers with lexapro? Will this cause me to spiral into further depression?

I see it this way. lexapro, powerful anti depressant / anxiety medication, beer, a depressant.

You can ask two different doctor's and get conflicting information/opinions on this...

Some say 1 or 2 drinks is okay, while another will recommend not drinking at all.

You are not going to have a dangerous reaction, like you would when mixing alcohol with a benzodiazepine. (Always a NO!)

However, the SSRI could exacerbate the effect of the alcohol...or conversely, the alcohol can render your Rx less effective.

Either way, you could be sabotaging your progress...

However, trying one drink and seeing how you feel at the time and the next day, could prove that you can tolerate moderate imbibing with no problem.:)

So you may want to take your doctor's advice into consideration, and simply see what works for you.

Drinking alcohol while on Lexapro may cause the following effects:

decreased efficacy of the medication
increased anxiety
worsening depression
sedation
There is also a danger that alcohol may increase the risk for Lexapro-related side effects. These can also be felt at a greater degree with alcohol usage. Side effects of the medication include:

nausea
insomnia
sleepiness
dry mouth
diarrhea

Hi

As you can see a lot of different opinions on this.

I completely stopped drinking for a good few years as found that alcohol and my meds did not mix well but I was a big drinker so knocked it on the head.

That being said I do now have the occasional drink but keep it to just a couple of beers and have not had any problems.

I have cut out drinking almost completely since starting lexapro. I find that not only do I feel terrible after a couple drinks but the next couple days my anxiety increases ten fold. However I believe everyone is different.
