Hi Ozarker,
I think control is a troublesome word when used in this application. It can be overwhelming to consider trying to control something so intimidating/menacing.
I thing good alternative phrases in regards to dealing with anxiety are management and acceptance.
We find a measure of peace when we stop fighting against the anxiety, and simply learn to accept/observe it for what it is....a part of the human experience. (albeit for us in an exaggerated form...hence the next point!)
That is not to say that we do nothing and suffer.
Certainly not....that is where the management comes in. We do all that we can in terms of our chosen tools...medication, therapy, self help, ect...
...and in this way find a balance that is both productive and realistic.
Part of the problem with me trying to control anxiety is that I already have issues with being in control ...so for me, letting go of some of that rigidity...yet still working towards dealing with my anxiety in pro-active ways has been key.
I am encouraging you to continue to find your own methods and balance as well.
