the attacks are back, and it all started with one...let me know if this is what a panic attack feels like for you too...
i was relaxing in the airport, reading a book (clancy, my favorite), and all of a sudden, out of the blue, things felt unreal. It felt like I was watching a movie, like it wasnt reality! The voices seemed distant and fake, and i felt for sure like i was going crazy. The crazy feeling lasted for about
10 seconds, but was succeeded by a racing heart and palpitations!! Now I am so afraid that that horrible feeling is going to come back, and that im going to go insane.
panic attack??
thanks!

Dear Yoyoma,
I am so sorry that this has happened to you.
Here is my list of sx for panic attack
chest pain
heart palpitations
difficulty breathing
dizziness
choking sensations
sweating
tingling
chills
hot flashes
trembling
abdominal distress
feelings of unreality
fear of dying
fear of going insane
These sensations often mimic symptoms of a heart attack or other life-threatening medical conditions. Remember if it is a panic attack it is self limiting but very scary and uncomfortable.
IMHO you had a panic attack, however please remember I am not a professional and can not take the place of your physician.
Do you have a fear of flying? Just a thought.
Hugs to you.

I'd like to add "racing thoughts" to that list of symptoms. You won't believe how many of my blog referrals come from search engine queries for racing thoughts. It's a pretty good percentage of them. I don't know why I haven't written an article specifically about
that, because it's one symptom that's actually pretty easy to deal with if you use relaxation techniques.

The event sounds all too familiar. The list of symptoms posted seem right on with what I have experienced in my 25 year panic attack history. One that wasn't there, and that many fellow sufferers have shared with me, is that of our head feeling "empty." It's hard to explain, just kind of like your head is full, what you hear sounds different in your head. I then go to the place when that happens where I immediately check out all the exits, go over all my strategies, look for the restrooms, fight NOT to flee, and then chastise myself for being weak. It is so unfair, and not true. I know I am not weak. Usually when an attack like the one you mentioned happens, I tell myself that no one is keeping me there, that I CAN leave if I want, and then sometimes just get up to see the outdoors. Once I remind myself I have a choice to stay or leave, I inevitably can stay. Even if leaving would cause disruption to schedules and people, I tell myself that I can. I guess that trusting factor allows me to stay and work out the feelings until they pass.
