dry skin anyone?

Is it eczema that you have, or just dry skin?  In patches?  All over? Is it like a rash?

 

RA, being autoimmune, will make you more suseptable to skin involvement.  It's the same for me and my lupus.  Eczema is autoimmune. So is psoriosis.  If it's eczema, a cortisone cream will help. Prescription strength is best.  Other than that, I use Galaxol Base, and Aveno skin cream.  Works well for me.  Also, keeping hydrated will help your skin.  If you're dehydrated it will present in your skin as well, so drinking lots of water is important.

The tops of my hands (at the knuckles) are drier than anything! My hands and fingers get really bad and I always end up with splits and cuts because I'm so dry. I have always had extra dry skin and the med's seem to make it worse. Of course, it's also winter and that doesn't help either. I use Aveeno for extra dry skin and it works wonders. I also do what Erin's doctor recommended -- short, cooler showers and I use soaps with shea butter. I also drink alot of water, which helps more in the warmer weather than the cold weather - never could figure that out. The one and only time I did not have dry skin was when we went to Australia in January/February (their summer). We were there during one of their more wet summers and the humidity gave me the most smooth skin I've ever had. Problem is, I hate humidity (can you say fuzz hair) and would never move to a place that was high in humidity!!!! Ah the joys of it all....

I already had dry skin to begin with. I felt like I was crawling out of it. I have it under control now. For the scalp that made me cringe I use Paul Mitchell with tea tree oil believe it or not my head hasn't itched since. For my skin:
I take luke warm short showers

Never use bar soap or any antibacterial liquid soap.

Never rub your skin too, lightly wash it like you are washing a baby.

Use a wash cloth once. Those poofs just compile bacteria.

Currently, I am using an one of those oil based shower gels I am having much better luck with that
Immediatly after shower without totally drying off moisturize with the best you can afford.

Pot creams are better than lotions. I had no luck with eucerin or cetaphil. I have the best luck with palmers pot cocoa butter. I just coat my skin then put on some old cloths.

Don't neglect your feet after showering I right away make sure I put some thick and gooey creme on them then and old pair of socks. Right now I am using Burt's bees coconut foot creme. ( it smells so good) Bag balm works great too.You can do this with your hands too and put on gloves. If you can sleep in all this it's better.

On my face I have a problem with any over the counter cream. It doesn't work. They are o.k. but really don't do the job. I have to gently exfoliate to get down to skin that I can actually moisturize. I just lightly use sugar and a bit of water. I have had nice results with Lancome's Absolute and some of the Adrian Arpel over 40 stuff the sell on QVC or home shopping been using it for last three years. I am only 38 now. I hate her makeup only some of her skin care stuff is acceptable. If your loaded use Estee Lauder or a department store brand. Make an effort to go there and try them out and ask for samples. Look for a face cream with a time release formula.

If none of this works and your skin isn't any better see if you can take benadryl orally or topically for itching and put a bag of frozen vegies on the worst spots.

Moisturize yourself from the inside use good fats in food and drink a ton of water!

Oh! and I live in Buffalo, NY so I keep a scarf over my face when I go out. I keep the heat down as low as possible or use a humidifier in my room at night to make up for what forced air heating takes away.

Like I said I started out with dry skin. I hope some of this helps.

I have AS and Fibro. I am only on my second dose of remicade.

Wow - excellent information there. Think I'll start using some of your suggestions today! Strange thing, my face is the least dry of anything on my body. I do use great products for my face (Origins) and have for years. It's the rest of my body that is like sandpaper!

Hi! firstly I have dry skin which causes great problem in winter I have uses varity of creams for that dry skin. But now my skin have become oily which has created many pimples in my face so any one can tell me the solution for getting back dry skin.

My husband has had horrendously dry cracked hands every winter for years. The kids got him some hand treatment that comes in a silver tube (maybe from body works?). It's got an extract of hemp in it and IT WORKS! I'd do a search for hemp cream and see what you can find. Just my 2¢.

I also have very dry skin and break out in a red scaley rash down my legs, arms and over my fingers.  I use a soap free wash for dry and sensitive skin and when it is bad I get an old stocking and fill the bottom half with fine oatmeal and wash myself with that as well as using a cortisone cream which you can get from your dermatologist.  The oatmeal works really well and is also very cheap.  I also use sorbalene which is the cheapest moisterisers you can get.  Dont know if you can get that in the USA as I am from Australia.

Because I am allergic...I was told by a dermatologist to only use DOVE soap because it is 1/4 cleansing creme, take short cool showers. I use Queen Helene coco butter and oatmeal lotion. I use a&d creme on my feet.

i know this sounds so simple but my derm told me min 8 glasses of water a day will cure and clear many skin issues as long as they are not bacterial or fungal, just like watering a plant.

as for pwolf we are neighbors!!!!! i too am a buffalonian, from the burbs. do you have RA?

Wonderful advice - I will start following as well as my dry skin has become a problem and I've started the dry face thing about 3-6 months ago as well.

Here's the puzzling question for you - for the last 4 weeks, my BACK has been miserably itchy. It doesn't look as bad as it feels. But it itches like crazy to the point the skin hurts. The few and far between times my husband is around to put lotion on it - it actually hurts when he touches it. So, the question is - how do I get lotion on my back daily when there is no one around to do it for me?

A quick way to get lotion on your back when you have no one to help you_First but the pump style lotion then unscrew the top and remove the pump-there is a long straw attached- Use the straw to wipe the lotion onto your back (the outside of the straw) then put on an old t-shirt as this method will leave you with excess lotion that doesn't get rubbed in-but that actually helps you get really moisturized.
