Does anyone out there have individual insurance?  I was recenlty layed off my job and probably will not work again for some times (not feeling well, severe itching, muscle/joint pains, etc.)  Thankfully, my job offers continuation of health coverage for up to a year and so I opted to take that even though the monthly cost is 5 times the amount I paid when I was an employee.  I've called up Blue Shield and Blue Cross  and a couple of others and they basically tell me they will not cover me becuase of my pre-existing condition (RA).  Has any of you had this problem with obtaining health insurance?  If so, what have you done?

You will need to keep the cobra insurance as you will not find any insurance company that will insure you with RA unless it is a state plan for the uninsured/uninsurable and that will be expensive. If you apply for and receive disability (SSD) then you may get medicare.

Yes, you're right.  It is expensive ($638 per month for Blue Cross/Blue Shield in the State of Florida).  Are you sure about Medicare?  I thought Medicare was only for senior citizens.  I am in the process of filing for disability.

Yikes!! That is very expensive Maudrine..and yes Medicare is for seniors.  However, here in the state of Colorado there is health care for low income families and if you quailify for disabiltiy we have medicaid. Medicaid is for the population under the age of 65...children and the disabled. I'm sure Florida must have similar programs.
