Welcome back and Happy New Year Ducky,

 

I hope you were away because of "good stuff" and not due to illness etc.  Today is Sat. Jan 10 and baby it is COOOOOOOOOOOOOLD outside..hmmm well it is winter afterall smilewinkgrin    But let me tell ya...cold enough to freeze the &*@#*^ off a brass monkey...lolol now THAT is cold.  -25 C at 8 am  I hope you're all keeping warm and relatively pain-free.

It is also so cold here, and snowing of all things! I woke up and my hip was burning and then my husband told me it had snowed over night and I thought that explains it! I'm so ready for winter to be over, I'm sick of the cold! Although, it looks like it is much colder where you are, 25 below? where on earth do you live girl?

Well it is the first day of the spring semester, and I have five classes on my plate. The morning was a snowy and cold drive in to the University. It is going to be a long day...My daughter has her conference today, plus it is 4-H night, can the day get any longer? It is 10am and I've only had my first class *sigh*.

I'm in Colorado, but it is not nearly as cold as where you are located.  How do your joints hold up through the winter months?

It's cold and rainy here.. (well cold for Charleston).. I to can't wait for this to be over.... I need the summer.. well, no, not really, 'cause I don't like the humidity.. I need the Spring.. where its warmer.. and no humidity! :)

I've been away for lots of different reasons.. and some of them, not good.. but that's life, right? :) Pain is just a constant anymore.. :( oh well.. we must trudge on!

I thought I answered the last question in the last thread about zantac - but it is not there. I was told by the nurse at my PCP's office to take zantac until I saw the GI b/c there was a 2-month wait to see him. She told me I could take up to 4 a day due to the severity of my situation (the bottle says 2). The GI told me to continue to take as-needed since it did seem to help me considerably. I have been able to keep it down to 1 or 2 a day for a while now...yeah! When I'm doing really well, I don't have to take it at all. Even better.

It was nice to get a haircut, though I'm not 100% happy with it, my hair looks and feel a TON healthier. I too have been seeing the same stylist since 1989...so, yeah, change is hard....but he's just too darn far for me these days and I end up getting a haircut once every 1 or 2 years! LOL.

Camama..You must wear your hair long? I'm glad you got your hair done :-) I was told to take pepcid by the GI doc but I failed the gastric empyting study and now I have an appointment next Friday to discuss my "treatment".  I have looked up my options and they are all scary sounding with yucky side effects but I will see what he has to say.  I read about low fat diets also low fiber and I already do low fat, since I probably eat maybe 5 to 10 grams of fat per day at times, and I even read where one suggested a liguid diet of all things...ack nono

Went to the rheumy and he said the inflammation is not due to the RA, maybe the stomach inflammation but not my slow moving tummy and not my bladder inflammation so that is that.

At least it is Hump Day

happy holidays hahahahah !!!!!  sooooooooooooooo much going on tooooooo much to tell!

read about peps and the cold!  i dont thind we have been in 2 digits for weeks in these arts and many a negative day!  soooooooo cold!

i am not going to pretend to catch up and read posts!  between my MIL having her 6th heart proceedure today in the past month, both my mom and MIL having pnuemonia and me having surgery off my meds for a few months now and work still out of control....... life has been pretty boring for me.   hahahhaha

me bones are aching and this morning i am a hobbling around and hands hurtin.  hopefully i can get back on meds in feb!

lets see best way to define my being busy!!!!! i had a surgical proceedure a wek ago wednesday - went back to work on tuesday but get this .... i havent even phoned the doctor yet post op for my follow up exam! hahahaha  i know that is stupid and everyday i say today i will take a moment a call and then the day goes by and i dont!  yesterday i was a bit too sore as i think i over did myself and forgot doing some stairs ........  i am not a sitter and frankly after general anesthesia and a uterine oblation i cooked dinner that night! hahahaa   man do i recommend a uterine oblation ladies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   a  piece of cake! and equal to a historectomy!  no more periods! whohoooo  know that is something to celebrate!!!!!!!!!!!!!  i never took a pain med!  heck i told them i hurt so bad from my RA  i thought the stomach was a walk in the park!    i think they thought i was crazy but i asked for a celebrex to take the edge off my hands and shoulders and hips! hahahahah

so as you see i havent changed much!  enjoying the fast life of work and family ..... well maybe not enjoying the work issues but heck i have a job!  and today not everyone can say that!   so for me the cold is the big issue!!!!!!!!  soooooooooooooooooooo cold here.  i do think that today will be our first hot one after a very cold spell.  we might make it to the twenties whooohooooo.  i just wished i could get my toes warm! hahahaha  so hugs and kisses to all i have missed  love ya alll!  sorry i am soooooooooo bad here as of late.  and yes i know i must call the doc today!  if i remember!!!???? have a new hire .... Yally girl! I'm glad you had your procedure and I have heard of those, my sister in law just had one in December in her docs office?? anyway she said her hubby could her out in the waiting room, she ended up with an infection and a trip to the ER, but it sounds like yours went very well, and it is a very common procedure, but try to take it easy, she did not and ended up in a bad way. Sounds like a hectic life and some stress, hope you get your meds back very soon. Gentle hugs and feel better soon, prayers and positive thoughts for the ladies in your life.

Well we had really nice weather all week...in the 60's but around here that is always a warning of something dreadful to come and this weekend we will be getting snow and ice. I have an appointment this afternoon with the GI doc who did all of my testing and since my emptying test didn't go well, he is wanting to see me. Maybe he can give me something for it so I can eat like a normal human again.

It's Friday and that is something to be thankful for, I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend :-)

Yeah, my GI was suggesting I try optifast to get some weight off quickly (and help liver,stomach,etc issues), but my PCP (who has taken early retirement) was very against those types of diets saying my health history is too shakey to do something like that....but I also don't think those are worth my trying.....if I don't loose the weight with my own effort, it won't stay off. Also, I gotta wonder does the GI REALLY believes in that stuff being healthy or is it becuase his 'group' is bringing on someone in their office to sell/support people on the program.

Well, we had an early winter and frost this year only to be followed by a few weeks of a heatwave. It's finally cooled down again and there is a tease of rain. A far cry from many of you who are having single-digit weather with a -50 windchill (yeah, sometimes I read the news)...jeesh, that is frigid cold!!! I seriously don't get how you guys function...I barely do here when it gets wet or in the 20s or 30s! Unfortunately, the weather is nothing for me to brag about...we're in a serious drought here and the heat isn't helping. We've had severe fire issues the last 2 years....another dry winter means 3rd year of drought, and goodness only knows what that means during fire season. shakehead

What kind of diet did your GI doc suggest? Mine didn't say anything about a diet, but I have read a lot about the  smoothies etc.  I went Friday for my follow up and the results of the stomach empything showed my  stomach emptied after three hours...he said it was severe case? anyway he prescribed reglan but I can't keep my eyes open after taking it, and while there the blood pressure was 150/90 again so I guess I need to see someone about that, I feel like I'm 80 instead of 37.  I may just try diets instead of the reglan, I just take too many pills as it is.  But gosh its good for weight loss if you need it, but I weighed in at 103 but my belly isn't small rolleyes

It is cold here around 15 and snow, snow, snow, what a way to start the week!

Wow...I need to be at 103lbs...but I'm (sadly) a long waaaay off. I never heard of a stomach emptying test before...I think mine takes about 3 days! LOL - Whhhaaa! What exactly is reglan? What meds are you taking? Why am I the only one who isn't thin from all the pills? LOL.

Everyone just said 'loose weight' when all this mess first started, we didn't know what was causing the problems. All my levels were way up, blood pressure, liver, glucose, cholesterol, weight....etc....so, I cut waaay back on everything: fat, cholesteral (eggs, dairy, red meat, read the labels on everything to make sure I got things with low cholesterol), stopped drinking soda, anything with artificial sweetener, sugar, salt, limited greatly bread/starch (only bought products that said '100% whole wheat' and checked the ingrediants to confirm),  etc...tried to drink a minimum of 64 oz of water a day. I even went so far to eat glucerna bars for the occasional meal when I had nothing else 'safe' to eat. Bought a lot of Lean Cuisines out of desperation.  Even though I had only lost 25 lbs (pretty quickly at that), I felt like it was 50...I lost a puffiness about me and my swollen stomach went away. I've been off the 'diet' for a little too long (laziness), weight is creeping up (6 lbs) puffiness back....decided to get back on track tonight! Stopping the Arava helped my problems IMMENSELY! ....who knew it could cause high BP and GI issues? Not my doctors! shakehead But, I still am too overweight to not continue weight loss.

The GI suggested the optifast b/c they are getting a dietician this month to be in their office solely to help people go on that particular diet...when I pushed the 'no thanks' he agreed that doing it by eating right and exercising was the better way. **

You know....the GI did recommend a book a few patients of his had good results on...but I'd have to look for it...he wrote it down for me somewhere.....

After my upper scope, the GI doc ordered whats called a gastric emptying study, basically you eat some really gross oatmeal (or egg) with some radio active stuff in it, and lie on a table for 90 minutes and watch on a screen as it digests. They are seeing how long it takes for your stomach to digest the contents and in a normal human it is about 45 minutes according to the GI doc I saw..Mine started when I couldn't even drink my normal amount of water or even eat regular food and I'm vegetarian so I'm not even eating high fat foods, well with the exception of cheese? Reglan is a med that helps the tummy speed up the digestion process, or makes them work more normally *I think*, there is another med but it is not FDA approved and has some side effects with the heart, so basically this is my only option. At this point we don't know what is causing this stomach paralysis. I take Elmiron, MTX, and Enbrel, not to mention vitamins because I'm deficient..probably because of the stomach paralysis rolleyes I just feel like I have eaten a huge meal all of the time, even when I have not had any food all day. It's yucky.

I think a lot of these RA meds..MTX especially are just toxic but what do we do? I'm not going to take the Reglan, I'm going to try diet first.

Hugs to you about the diet and all of the foods you have tried, how frustrating!! My husband had to go the route of "just lose weight" I'm 103 but I feel really unhealthy and my hubby is a bit over and he is super healthy, he takes no meds for anything :-)

When my liver gets really bad, I cannot eat. My metabolism is pretty slow and screwed up, but I don't think it's quite that bad! Thank goodness. I've never heard of what you described, that is unbelievable and quite amazing (if it weren't so frustrating to deal with).

Is there any chance one of those meds is doing that to your stomach? Like the methotrexate? How did they determine to do that test - the fact you always feel full? Is 103 quite underweight for your height or just slightly? If your stomach gets full - does your body still get the fatigue one gets when they haven't eaten? Is the Reglan helping? Is there anything else they are going to do to try and get the stomach to work on its own?

I hope you are doing well:)

After the upper  scope the GI decided on that next test, maybe it told him I needed the gastric empything study, not really sure.  The rheumy says it can be caused by meds, but didn't say it was from any that I'm taking currently.  My initial  complaint of fullness was what got the ball rolling on the Upper scope in the first place and it just went from there.  The Reglan does help but I feel super anxious on it, so  I limit the times I take it and as long as everything is liquid  consistency it works fine and I feel  great.  I have to admit, since I have been drinking all of these healthy smoothies, I feel better, and my hair looks better, so maybe the fruit and extra protein will be an added bonus at least.

My weight is okay, I'm barely 5"0, but I look a bit thin.  Other than diet and the Reglan that is all that can be done, the other med is not FDA approved and I'm to scared to try it.

I'm about an inch or so shorter than you - yup, really - and I (sadly) have a long way to anywhere close to 103. sad   But i'm working on it. .. . I don't know why eveyrone else is loosing weight on plaquenil and not me! LOL.

eating only liquid diet...that's got to be tough, but I guess if you feel 'full' all the time, you may not be aggrivated by it. Do you put protien powder in the shakes to get your protein in?

We're doing our best to avoid getting sick around here. my joints are acting up and worrying me (they miss the arava), but otherwise we're good. Some serious bugs going around right now.

Yowzer camama and momto4 and anybody else looing in - welcome from a frozen Apsley where - after a few hours of snow 48 hours ago, England came to a standstill. Can you believe that in London there were no buses nor underground trains on Monday at all and that there were very few overground trains at all in the whole of Southern England. 6 INCHES OF SNOW BRINGS ENGLAND TO A HALT!!!1 Can you beieve that? You people learn to live with snow every winter and know how to handle it - but England - no way. Because it doesn't snow very often at all the authorities decided a long time ago that it's better to save the money and only run the risk of grinding to a halt every three years or so and not have contingency plans. Believe me - thousands of schools were closed right across southern England, operations were cancelled in hospitals. no trains, no buses in many places, clogged up  motorways - there was a 34 miles tailback on the M25 the London Orbita  motorway. And all because of 6 INCHES of snow. Welcome to the third world hahaha.

I am stilll working - Just - and I am still planning on retiring later this year but the pension fund are being arses about my payout so it looks like the union will get involved which is a pity as my employer suppoorts me.

 

If you all remember I moved house this time last year and living in this new house is costing an arm and a leg and the mother in law being home all day burning carbon fuels to keep china going doesn't help. I tell ya it's a novel experience living with oone's mother in law or should I say having one's mother in law live with us - not recommended for family harmony but there are some things one must do in life when push comes to shove and she woudn't have survived the winter on her own.

 

Hi ducky how is civilian life treating you and has your hubby had to go back to shiiteville again? Soon be all over hopefully - alll those lives lost and for what? A hand full of sand and all the presidents mates with their noses iin the trough.

I know here come the thread police - but Barak sure has one act to follow and he coudn't have asked for a bigger load of guano to clear up than the load he has inherited. We cannot talk over here as we are actually bailing out the banks instead of letting them go bust and then stepping in and taking them over for free and bail the ordinary people out. I believe your people are hurting too and not just because of the RA.

hello dear ones!

here I am...no, I really haven't fallen off the face of the earth, though some days think I would like to!   Wow, can't believe it's been so long since I peeked in here....not for lack of thinking about all of you...it's just been my life of late.  I am going to try and go back over posts, have read a few...Mom and CaMama, how are the tummy issues?  103, Mom...gosh...I don't think I EVER weighed that litle lol!   But, I am almost 5'9" so that is pretty unrealistic for me at any level....still, like most of us, would love to take off a few.  Believe it or not, I joined a kickboxing class haha!  It's really a blast...a wonderful stress reducer that's for sure.  I was afraid it might be too much for me, but I just kind of take it at my own pace, and it's been great.  My friend and I go about three times a week...so far it hasn't seemed to kill my feet, which is what i was most worried about.  Talked to my doc about it first, and she said to go for it, so I did.  My boys think I am absolutely nuts...not many 51 year-old mom's doing kickboxing I guess...I think I kind of embarass them sometimes, but they just laugh.  Not like they never embarassed me before, right????

Lots been happening around here,(besides my various mid-life crisies). My friend with the breast cancer will be starting chemo soon.  Was a tough decision for her, the docs really left it up to her, which I though was terrible!!  Her tests all came back right in the middle zone between definitely needing it or not.  So, she decided that if they couldn't tell her for sure that she DIDN"T , she should go ahead.  This weekend she has asked me to go and help her pick out a wig...yikes!!  I really pray I'm up for this...I so want to give her the kind of support and encouragement she needs..  Had to spend the day baking cookies after she talked to me about this one...I needed baking therapy!

Looks like my mom is having shoulder replacement surgery next Tuesday..I'm a little freaked about it, afterall she is almost 81...but she is in alot of pain, and has very limited mobility in her right arm..so if this can help.....please keep her in your prayers...she is such a doll.  Just the sweetest dear lady! 

Chicken pox and strep are running through my daycare kids...praying they all keep the germs to themselves!!  They've all had their vaccines, but apparently there is a strain of chicken pox out there that beats the vaccinations.  Not sure what this means for me...I've had chicken pox, and have also had shingles once.  Does anyone know if you can get shingles more than once, and can you get it from an exposure to chicken pox?  I sure hope not!

Hanging in there with the RA...enbrel sure hasn't been the great thing I had hoped..but I'm able to keep going, which is a good thing..no real complaints.  When I last visited the doc, she wasn't real happy with the way my feet looked, and if they are still the same next visit in April, she may switch me to Humiria.....we'll see.  One thing that was a bit strange...had a couple of itchy dry spots on my leg...get them quiteoften in the winter.  I showed them to her, and she said it was psorisis (sp)!  I was shocked...maybe I've had that along and didn't know it.  Is PA any different than RA?

Hey Bear!  Cold over there too???  Saw some stuff on the news about your winter...don't get much snow in Florida...but boy, Michigan and Wisconsin winters could be brutal.  I don't miss all that stuff at all!  Last few days have been pretty cold by Florida standards, tonight we have a hard freeeze warning out. A couple of weeks ago we had some patchy frost on the gound a few mornings.  Farmers were going crazy trying to protect the strawberry, tomato, and citrus crops.  Looks like they will be busy again tonight.

I did get an e-mail from Boo a while back....need to get with her again...she was doing well, just crazy, crazy busy....the sale of the business was supposed to close right about now I think.  So, maybe she'll have more computer time....she also had had a new grandbaby around Christmas time.  She sounded great..  As far as Erin, it's been quite a while since I heard from her, Raven too, come to think of it.  But I did get a new e-mail address...so I think I'll drop them all a note and check in.

Camama...It's okay about the weight, really!! I would KILL for a veggie burger right about now with everything on it!!!!! I'm vegetarian but giving up the bread for this crazy liquid/smoothie diet has been horrid let me tell you! Tonight, I"m fixing cheese ravioli and thinking, how can I puree this? My life now revolves around food and can I puree it? It's pretty sad rolleyes My husband told me he wants to be supportive and try my diet, he has no idea! Last night, he ate three of those brawts (sp) they are like hot dogs? and I'm thinking to myself..well alright, but you are going to be awfully hungry!

Jody!!!! So happy to hear from you! That is fantastic about the kickboxing, you go girl!! I haven't been taking the Enbrel either, the 100 copay is just crazy, and the mail order company, sending in the payment just got to be a hassle, so far so good without it, and it is one less medication to take. Prayers and positive thoughts for your friend, and in time her hair will grow back even more beautiful than it is now. Hats and scarfs are also nice choices and not as scratchy as wigs, but then it is a matter of personal preference. The lady that I know actually shaved her hair instead of letting it fall out here and there. She is a very strong lady and is also a survivor :-) Try to stay well, with all of your little ones getting sick, although my daughter had strep not too long ago and she was the only one in the family to get it, bless her heart. It is possible to stay healthy even on these yucky meds of ours!

Bear! I'm so happy to see you post! That is a lot of snow for you :-) Sorry to hear about the mother in law woes, that can be stressful I"m sure! The only thing to do is make the best of it, but bless your heart for doing it :-)

Wow Bear - shutting down the whole city. That's got to be pretty incredible (and inconvenient for those expecting surgery or having a baby!) We almost never get snow here in San Diego, but we do get frost and it actually hailed yesterday!

Mom, that is great your husband is taking a supportive stance on your diet. That's awesome (even though he won't last past a meal!) tongue   Good luck and I hope they find something to help you get over this.

Jody, so good to hear from you! I used to kickbox, it is so fun! Enjoy it! I thought shingles were like chicken pox, you pretty much don't get them twice. But, I do not know that for sure. Good luck with staying healthy. Kids around here who were vaccinated are getting the chicken pox as well. Hang in there with your friend and your mom's surgery. That's a lot to handle emotionally, but your love and support is much appreciated by both of them, I'm sure!

I've had a rash on my hands and arms for about 2 weeks now...very itcy. I think it's hives that were originally kicked off by a mild sun burn (we hd such extreme heat for almost a month - but it's FINALLY raining!!!!) I'm so sensitive to the sun now....anyway, I've but OTC cortizone on it and am constantly putting various lotions on it (Gold Bond Ultra, Cetaphil, etc)....it comes and goes in intensity. Odd.

I heard from Erin just after New Year's and she sounded good, happy.  :-) ***

so how is everyone doing?????  hope there are voyers out there??? although i am not one.

been soooooooo busy with the new job i really dont have time to chat and honesly afer ans 100 email a day the last thing i want is to go online!

i am excited i start my  humeria this weekend after being off it for what .....  4 months!!!!  been eating those prenisones and i hate what they do to me.... lots of chest pain but me thinks half is work realted now that i am a big shot..... hahahahahaha  and the other half is idk ok.... work stress..... 

work is here and very busy. been in my new job 5 months now and honestly  iw ould take my old one back in a heart beat.  wya tooooooo much stress.

i work from  5-6 everyday and when i cme home the last thing i want to do is go online.  i have the responsibility of what ..... 7 peps and no exageration maybe 50 different dept requests a day!!!!!!!!!!!!  i have chest pain and jioint pain bur i am not a quiter and i will make this all work.

 

so that is why sweet yally is gone..... not that i am sweet but i love trying to make others see a cup half full and i cant even get a drink during the day!!!!

i dotn think i have taken a lunch in 5 months//// my choice. 

 

i am paying the price sometimes but i am stubborn and that is that/
