Strange question - but - has anyone heard of a connected between the Klebsiella bacteria and Ankylosing Spondylitis and if so, it's role in the disease.

Yes. It's not definitive, but there seems to be a strong correlation. Google "klebsiella ankylosing spondylitis". You can also ask at the forum at Spondylitis Association of America www.spondylitis.org

Hi! The reason I'm asking is that I've recently found some medical records of mine from when I had some serious kidney infections and the hospital notes say that over a period of a cpl months I had extremely high levels of this bacteria which when I looked it up seems to have some kind of link to AS.

I, too, find the connection between kleb and AS very interesting. My mum, who passed from AS complications, also had very high levels of kleb with kidney infections. I wish the researchers would do more studies on this.

Researched loads!!! It's really interesting, the bacteria seems to be hospital contracted and not very commonly found in the outside community and passed within the hospital obviously on hands (yuk) and catheters etc. Apparantly, research has found that it can mimics other molecules (molecular mimicry) and if a person with the HLA B27 gene contracts it, it seems to react with this to cause AS!!!!!!! One medical website states that AS is the end result of repeated attacks of the Klebiella Pneumoniae! Kings College in London who have studied it apparantly say that procedure SHOULD be that anyone who sees a Rheumatologist and has suspected AS should have be HLA B27 tested AND have a test for Klebiella Antibodies. Really interesting.

I was intrigued by your post as my son was diagnosised with AS last summer.  We went to several doctors with conflicting diagnosis.  The problem was he wasn't presenting the classic symptoms of the disease, but he does have HLA B27.  He took one does of Humara and came down with a sinus infection 12 days later.  He has had chronic sinus infections since he was young and was treated with several different antibiotics.  I took him to a nutrionist who is also a scientist and was told he probably had the Klebsiella bacteria.  I was not aware of the link between the bacteria and AS until I saw this posting.  He will be tested later this week for the bacteria.  Does anyone know of a treatment for the bacteria?

As far as I could decipher (not medically minded at all!) it seems that it is pretty hard to get rid of, and usually has to be treated with several strong antibiotics, I know when I was infected with it I was ill for quite a while before it was cleared in hospital. I don't really understand the molecule mimicry bit, but, when I searched google on this it seems to say that the bacteria can mimic certain genes, HLA B27 being one of them. If you find out anything else let us know!!!
