Anyone Have Luck With Doxycycline?

Hi! I am new here and was wondering if anyone has tried

Doxycycline for their RA? I was diagnosed last year

with Lupus & RA and have tried Orencia, plaquenil,

methotrexate, prednisone and more. I was given

Doxycycline last month by my dermatologist for some

cystic acne that started on my jawline as a side

effect to the Orencia. After about a week on the Doxy

I noticed that I was able to actually open my hand and

move my fingers- for the first time in months. I researched

antibiotic therapy and found many studies that showed

positive results for joint pain/swelling from RA and other

joint diseases. I took the information to my Rheumatologist

and she agreed to put me on 200 mg of Doxy so we can

see how well it works. I am going to stop the Orencia.

Has anyone tried antibiotic therapy?

No, but I have read here in the past with people who have. If you do a search you will probably find the old posts. When I enquired, the doctor who prescribed it wanted me off all my other meds. I just couldn't take the risk, he said I'd get worse before I got better and I'd have to wait up to a year for the effects to show up. I put it all in the too hard basket! This was for an alternative treatment of RA with an old fashioned anti biotic, that seemingly can work well for some people.
But I've had Doxycycline antibiotic for pneumonia and not noticed any improvement with my joints!
If it works for you, go for it!

My vet prescribed it for my dog for his allergies-she and I discussed how it is often used to treat humans with autoimmune disorders. The theory is sound-it should work.

Doxycycline is anti-inflammatory incidental to its antibiotic properties. Don't be fooled; just because you feel better on it doesn't necessarily mean that any number of other anti-inflammatory substances (notably Turmeric, which I can't say enough good things about when taken in high enough doses with Piperine to boost absorption!) wouldn't work as well or better for you without the numerous downsides of ABs.

Some theories of how certain auto-immune diseases work suggest that there is an as-yet undiscovered underlying pathogen which can be supressed or even cured with ABs. I'm not too sure about that, though some people report results with AB treatment that can't quite be explained by the anti-inflammatory properties alone.

Hi Pamtea,

I've also done some research into antibiotic therapy (see my post from today) and have just recently started doxycycline. No conclusions after one day's use, but I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks Mike! So far the inflammation in my feet and shoulders is much better but my hands are the same. The doxy has some GI side effects but I think it is preferable to the Orencia. Good Luck!
