My mother's sed rate was 39 (range listed was 0-20). Her RA QUANTITATIVE was 23.3 (range 0-11.9).

The reason she was tested was because her hand has been hurting her and when they xrayed it, it was not broken, but the radiologist said there was a lot of blood flow to her hand. My mom is 63.

What does all this mean? I know the doctor will tell her, but I do not want to wait for the appointment. Can someone at least give me an idea what this means for her?

I have been reading on Rheumatoid Arthritis, but it all sounds scary and is every part of the body affected?

Please know we are not doctors here and any second guessing would be that.
So it'd be good to wait and see what your mom's doctors has to say, yes this can be hard
but a doctor can give better info, blood tests can change from day to day from what
my rheumatoid doctor told me, maybe ask about your mom's doctor about getting a hand
MRI done. A diagnosis of Rhuematoid Arthritis can be scary, but once the
diagnosis is made then there are medicine out there that might be able to help
your mother, so try not to panic yet, as your mother needs your support and
help and is looking toward you for that, so be there for her.

I understand no one here is a doctor, but can anyone tell me about what RA does?

My mom is afraid it is going to totally cripple her whole body. Now, understand, if someone on here told me that, I would not go running to my mom to tell her. But if someone can give me a little information on what it is like to live with RA, that would be great.

hello lady i have had RA for 1yr now so still new to it as such but just wanted to say that it can be scary when you don;t know about it.
Depending on what she is diagnosed with as there are different types of RA she will get better or worse.
having RA doesn't mean she will be a cripple at all, i thought that too when i was told about it and i'm only 30!

There are lots of diferent meds out there and i have now started my 3rd med for RA, i have methotrexate, plaquenil and now salazopyrin en.
i was scared also about the drugs as the side effects can be scary when you read about them but most people are good with the side effects or learn to deal with them.

I have experienced pain in my hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders,knees and (ankles sometimes) so no its not all joints.
i have found having ra difficult with having a 20 month old baby boy is hard to deal with but also going from a lively energised waitress to being on crutches due to my knee pain. not everyone uses aids i just have needed them to do everyday jobs.

in my opinion and no fact base admin i find that lots of people get on well with having ra and then others like me may find it difficult to find the right combo of drugs but be patient and she will get it i'm sure if she as ra

I didn't mean to come off harsh, sorry about that. but like Dee said, RA effects/affects, each person differently
and if the doctors can get your mom on medicines it can greatly slow the damage to the joints, that's the major
concern is trying to slow the damage to the joints, ect...It can also effect/affect the lungs. Sometimes
people have a lot of damage yet have a good life, while others don't do so good. So it's kinda hard for
me to tell you what I feel like, if your mom is doing fine, she'll have good days and bad days, even with
medicine. I have already tried two medicines for RA and neither one has worked for me and I was
forced to stop taking them, but I have hope that a medicine is out there for me that will help. Try to
be encouraging with your mom as that can help. With all the advances in medical sciences RA is treatable.
I find a good moist heating pad can help and trying to keep as active as I can, sometimes physical
therapy helps. The cold weather outside hurt me more than anything. I hope this info helps.
I also, searched the web on RA which is something you might want to do and I got a few RA magazines from Wal-Mart.
I'm also only had the RA Dx for little under a year. and I'm in my 40's...
