NO LONGER TAKING HUMIRA OR INJECTING ENBREL: From someone who had been diagnosed and treated for psoriatic arthritis for DECADES (included Humira and then Enbrel shots and methotrexate which resulted in pneumonias, and painful cortisone shots directly into inflammation spots for years), the answer was .... going gluten-free.
Do your research outside of the doctor's office (my top NYC rheumatoid arthritis specialist never mentioned gluten as a possible culprit) !!! For some of us, our bodies recognize gluten (protein found in wheat, barley, rye) as a "foreign protein" and the auto-immune system kicks in. After 2 weeks on a gluten-free diet, I was pain free. It's been 6 months now with episodes of only minor finger pain that resulted from my not reading a label (not realizing that my vitamins had gluten in the ingredients, for example). Going gluten-free has meant that I am DRUG FREE. Also heard a similar success story from a friend recently about
a gluten-free diet working for someone diagnosed with lupus. Gluten-free diets are a must for any child diagnosed with autism as well. Allergy sufferers should also research going gluten-free. Hope this helps another person suffering and looking for answers. Read the NYT article, "The Boy With a Thorn in His Joints" as a start.
