Hand won't fully open

Has anyone ever had that happen? Dr. said that RA has set me up for carpal tunnel in my right hand, but it's odd that the hand will close just fine...just won't open all the way. Been taking 16mg of mtx for about 9 years.

Hello and Welcome to HealingWell, I never heard that RA leading to carpal tunnel. I would consider maybe getting a second opinoin.

Hi musicmom, I just signed up to this chat sight, hoping for advise, support, info etc :) . I'm not even sure that I have RA, but all of my blood tests indicate that I have, and I have a specialist appointment in a weeks time. I'm already a type 1 diabetic and this new prospect has me feeling pretty scared for the future. I've been googling madly for a week now, reading what ever comes up, and one site I found definitely mentioned carpel tunnel in relation to RA, so I just thought I'd throw that out there. Good luck x

Yes RA will definitely lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. It causes the "tunnel" to swell putting pressure on the tendons & nerves running through it. I suffer with it in both wrists having lost a lot of function in my right hand from it alone, not to mention 26 years of fighting RA that was diagnosed at 14 years old.

RA can also contribute to PINS syndrome (same concept as carpel Tunnel but deep motor branch of the radial nerve as it goes through a tunnel in the forearm) then you can fully close your hand but can't fully open it.
