Hi Don,
I stopped taking Orencia on my own about 6 months ago because I kept getting infections and felt it just wasn't worth it (plus I hate the injections). I had the gut feeling that everytime I gave myself an injection, I was making myself sick somehow.
Shortly after stopping I was diagnosed with skin cancer because of the orencia (or previously enbrel), so it was somewhat prophetic that I stopped on my own. I would have been taken off it anyway because of the cancer. It took a good 3 months for the inflammation to build back up in my body which resulted in the recent bad flare I've been experiencing. After much thought and discussion with my doctor, I've decided to go back on the orencia (with dr. recommendation) and simply consult a dermatologist every 6 months for skin checks. Fortunately, the type of cancer I had does not metastisize, so it isn't lethal. Having one skin cancer, however, does increase the risk of melanoma skin cancer, which is lethal.
Having lived without the orencia, on just the methotrexate for the last several months, I feel it is worth the risk to take the orencia and just be vigilant.
