How do you handle family colds while being on biologics?

Given that biologics suppresses your immune system, how do you handle colds in your household? Presumably, some precautions would have to be taken but, do you come off the biologic during that time?

When I was on mtx I felt like I had a sore throat more often and I was taking folic acid and vitamin c...get your flu shot yearly however, you have to work it in around the bio's, your doctor can help you on that.. I was always the sickly one in my family, but overall the mtx didn't make it worse, just that I was more fearful of people who coughed...it does increase your fears, maybe, make a talk schedule with a counselor about this...when you first start a bio this can be very scary, really wish doctors would talk to their patients about these fears...you can always buy a protective mask at a pharmacy, more and more people are doing that, so that would be understandable...let family members know that your on meds that reduce your immune system and see how they respond...some families understand...

I'm on Enbril and work in a school. I just take extra care to wipe surfaces and wash my hands A LOT! I get a flu shot. Like Susie, I have been sick less often, but when I do get sick, boy howdy, it's always a doozie! I only go off my Enbril when I have a viral or bacterial infection, or when I have surgery. I haven't had any problems staying on with minor infections, like ear infection or cut. In the ten years on biologics I have had only one bad bout with flu, shingles, pink eye, and bronchitis. I can name them because that's all I've had in ten years, but like I said...very sick with each.
My suggestion is to take precautions and if you do get sick, try to get on antibiotic or antiviral and go off biologic immediately. Otherwise, try not to worry about it too much.
