Cortisone shots in knee

So has anyone ever resorted to a cortisone shot in the knee? They did an x ray the other day and said I have osteoarthritis in that knee. This pain started very suddenly. I had been doing my PT exercises with the band and woke up the next day hurting in a different spot, the back of my knee. Before, it only hurt in the front and when I was going down stairs. Now, it kills me to walk in the back of my knee. I think I tore something and the PA said that is quite possible. I think I am also going to ask for an MRI before they do a cortisone injection.

They gave me some diclofenac gel. I used it for the first time tonight. We'll see if that helps any.

Anybody had any similar experiences with their knees, PT and or cortisone?? This knee has given me trouble for a while. I think an MRI is warranted.

Anybody else have osteoarthritis in their knee? What does it feel like? Does it hurt at rest or just when you walk on it and where does it hurt? Sharp pain, or dull?

Yes, I have osteoarthritis in both knees & in other joints. It's one of the types of arthritis that is caused by wear & tear & natural aging process. People can have it from mild to severe & the pain ranges differently for each person.

My knees often swell if I have done a lot of activity, especially after working in the flower beds. Weather changes, especially in the winter really makes them ache. I have done injections & they did help. I urge you to give the gel time to work, it will take some time before you get some relief. I cannot take NSAIDS, so I use a lot of the OTC pain patches that has lidocaine in them, they work for awhile. Also, I use moist heat. Other people will use cold packs, you have to find what works the best. If you have access to a jacuzzi that should help. With arthritis we have to keep moving our joints.

Yes!! Moist heat makes a HUGE difference, doesn't it?? I have a heating pad but one day I decided to dampen and heat up a towel in the microwave and couldn't believe how much better it felt. Maybe I should bring one to work with me! The relief only lasts so long. When I am back up on my feet for a while, it starts hurting again.

Yes, moiat heat is so, so much better than dry heat. I use the wet towel & microwave all the time. I do have a moist heating pad but it just does not do the job quite as well.

Hi I also have a lot of issues with my knees and they lock up or sublux
have had cortisone shots into them and had differing results one time was relief after a day of the shot & lasted for a bout a month or so and next time if anything it got worse hurt swelled and by the time the swelling went down the knee was back to its normal sore. also make sure they use a mix of cortisone & local anaesthetic otherwise the injection Hurts sometimes they can put a local in first.
it would be a good idea to get an MRI done first to check for tendon & ligament damage

Thank you for the replies. Definitely a good idea to get an anesthetic shot first!!!! I want to avoid the shot. It's actually been a little better the last two days. I think rain is heading this way b/c it started hurting some this evening. I am going to ask for an MRI. I am shocked that the PA didn't order one. Just another way they blow off people of a certain age and assume the pain is arthritis. Sharp, bad pain that comes on quickly isn't arthritis! There is one orthopedic practice here. I've been blown off by the NP at my rheumatologist and now this. I am frustrated.

I would really push for an MRI. Although I have had the cortisone shot three times and think it's great, it's not a fix and it can lead you to exacerbate the problem.
