Hi all,

it's been a while since I have posted. I recently had an irregular Kappa Lamda Light Chain Blood test. This is thought to be a precursor to Myeloma cancer and MGUS. I looked back on my blood test and noticed that it didn't occur until I started biologics. I am now looking for an alternative as the biologics has done something to put me in this state. I am fortunate that my results did not show active cancer and I'm not willing to take the risk.

Hi, Graygirl! I have ankylosing spondylitis which is like rheumatoid arthritis of the spine. I was in abject misery. My rheumatologist wanted to put me on Remicaid infusions and I refused. I didn’t like the possible side effects...especially when my family history was considered. I had taken ibuprofen for years for pain but developed bleeding ulcers. So I stopped the ibuprofen and that’s when I went downhill fast. The doctor said I probably have had AS for years but kept it under control with ibuprofen.

I decided to start it up again and my Internist had me start a medication that helps prevent ulcers called misoprostol. I was feeling somewhat better and did some searching. On a National Institutes of Health site I saw that Robaxin (methocarbamol) helped some with AS so I asked my rheumy if they would prescribe it and they did. This, along with the ibuprofen, has made a significant difference in my pain.

The prescription said to take two tablets four times a day but I decided to try one tablet four times a day because I didn’t want drowsiness. It worked! Then, as I improved, I was able to backdown on both medications. I now take ibuprofen (3 tablets) and Methocarbamol (1tablet) twice a day...before breakfast and before dinner. I have no side effects from the methocarbamol taking it this way and have had no ulcers with the help of misoprostol. I’ve been doing this for seven years.

I just wanted to share my experience with you...just in case it might work for you. Before I took these, I could hardly walk and had to use two canes. Now I do not need canes. I’m happy!

First, I am not a doctor. I can only speak from my own personal experience. I am kind of in the same boat. I have high Immunoglobulin A (IgA) that was caught each time I have had a celiac disease blood panel. My IgA has been steadily increasing. I am going to be rechecked in a few weeks. My research indicates that it can be due to MGUS which can be a precursor to Mutiple myeloma or just autoimmmune Disease. Since I have autoimmune Gastritis, celiac disease and Hashimoto’s, we think my elevated IgA is a result of autoimmune disease. I do not have any out of range lab issues, like anemia that would cause me to push for further testing. Having a firm MGUS diagnosis only means that my risk for myleloma is 1% every year. Pretty low odds. about 3% of the population over the age of 50 have MGUS. Things tend to wack out as we age. It is a bit more concerning if you are very young. I would not worry. I would also not necessarily blame your biologic medication either for this. I have not read anything about that side effect at all though I have not thoroughly researched this because I have never taken any biologic medications.

I had the same problem. My rheumy immediately sent me to an oncologist. He did lots of bloodwork and said I was fine. So I have continued on with my biologics. I don’t want to be cripple and my RA is raging with me. I will be having a full body bone scan with contrast tomorrow. I hope he can find out how my RA is so he can put me on some meds that will address it. I keep having to change them because they quit working. My sed rate is 92 so I’m hurtin g very bad

Hi Graygirl. I’m in the same boat as you. I have been on biologics for about 5/6 years. I was first on Remicade and I’m now on Simponi Aria. Recently, my kappa/ lambda has come back high. I do think it it do to the biologics or at least the constant stimulation or suppression of my immune system. I’m thinking about going off my RA meds, but hate to do so due to severe chronic pain and high cytokine levels ( which cause an array of symptoms). Currently, looking for a more holistic/ natural alternative to all the meds before I start having to fightsomething like cancer do to meds.
