Methotrexate side effects

My doctor just changed my dosage of methotrexate to .08 or on an insulin needle it is 80 units. I took it on Thursday at night. Woke up around 3am with nausea. No vomiting. I have been nauseated ever since I took the shot. No vomiting just nauseated. I have had to take zofran in morning and during night to ease it off. Anyone else had this problem after an increase of dosage and if so does it go away as your body adjusts. Thanks and gentle hugs.

Hi Peggy:

No thankfully, I did not get nausea from Methotrexate pills or shots. Although it is a side effect. I had hair loss, tiredness, bruising and mouth sores. I don't use it anymore.

I did have nausea a couple weeks ago, though I think it was from Stevia. I normally use water, soda and vinegar or diet ginger ale, if I have nausea. If that doesn't work after a while, then I make myself throw up. As long as it is 2 or more hours after my other meds. Nausea makes for a crummy day.

Hopefully, you feel better.

MsOuchie thanks for the reply. I’m pretty sure since I increased the dosage this time that the nausea has come from that. You just never know wirh these meds. I will be talking wirh my Rheumatologist on Monday if it’s still going on. Your so right it makes for crummy days and nights. I have certainly had hair loss as well.

Yes, that's probably it. I'm glad that you are seeing your Rheumy tomorrow and again I hope that you feel better. With some meds, some of the side effects go away after a while.


One of my meds has forced me to eat less, since I've lost my appetite. That works fine with Diabetes, so I'm not going to worry about it. I'm feeling better otherwise.

So glad to hear you are feeling better. I have recently been put on metformin for diabetes. They say it’s good for helping you loose weight. I surely hope so. I could stand to loose about 60 pounds. Lol have an awesome night.

Good luck with losing some weight. I know from experience that it is a challenge. It's normally good all around. For Arthritis, Diabetes and other health issues.

psbg has it gotten any better? I am not on MTX now but I was for several years. I took it as an injection and the entire time I took it the next few days afterward I always felt sick like with the flu. No energy, mild nausea (no vomiting) and a lot of fatigue. After that though I would always perk up and feel better but those first two days after the shot were always a real drag.
I think the effectiveness was pretty negligible and I eventually asked my Rheumy to take me off of it and remained taking Actemra. It has its own lovely side effects though, like a sinus headache that lasts for a few days. There really is no alternative to it that I have found even with a diet and fasting. Those help quite a bit but not enough on their own unfortunately.

I am doing well with the methotrexate. I have just started back to because it caused my immune system to get so low I was getting all kinds of infections and catching viruses. I hope I’m gonna be ok now as the pain from stopping it has been terrible. My dr also started me on orencia with it. Although I failed with orencia once before he is hoping it will work with the methotrexate this time. He said orencia doesn’t lower your immune system like other meds do. I’m praying I don’t start getting sick again as the methotrexate has worked so well for me this time. I hope you are doing well. No weight loss tho.
