Dental Work and Enbrel...HELP!

My new rheumatologist told me to stop taking antibiotics. I have been on them for nine months. It just occurred to me that I have dental work this week of an invasive nature (deep planing and scaling). I wasn't worried about it because my previous doctor said it was okay as long as I was on antibiotics. Now, I don't know what to do. Does anyone have any advice? My new rheumatologist doesn't want to manage my infectious disease issues; does this mean I should consult my GP? Or does this dental work and Enbrel issue fall into his jurisdiction. I don't know what to do. HELP!

oooooh...this disturbs me.  for such a dental procedure, and you...being on Enbrel which can lower your ability to fight infection; i would seriously SERIOUSLY make a complaint about this to someone...the dentist/rheummy/GP. 

i mean, after that sort of dental work?...a person is usually put on antibiotics for at least a week or something!

 

i would make sure all of your docs are on the same page...have one call the other, he/she may change the other's mind and gear this situation in a better direction.

The new rheumatologist didn't know about the dental work. We had so much to discuss that I forgot to ask him about it. So confusing.

i agree i think u need some antibiotic for this but not all are the same for same reason. who rx'd the long term? u mentioned infectious disease? do u have a specialist for that? i say ask anyone u can get a hold of; the rhuemmy the doc and the dentist. u might be put on an antibiotic anyway from dentist but he needs to know ur history for certain. and if he is puzzled ask another doc treating u. good luck with the teeth and hope u smile pretty for the camera.....

I talked to my GP. My rheumatologist said no Enbrel right before procedure and no Enbrel for three or four days after. Yuk. I have four separate procedures, so I am going to be aching and hurting (whining, here) over the next two months. Then, amoxicillian and flagyl on the day of the procedure and for three or four days afterwards. After the procedures, doc is going to place me on low dose antibiotic supressive therapy to ward off the sinus and urinary tract infections. That way, I won't have to worry all the time about whether Enbrel is going to kill me by infection. This is fun, isn't it?

I had major surgery back in October (tubal ligation), and I don't recall being told to stop enbrel or take preventive antibiotics?    I didn't seem to have any problems with the surgery or infections.  I had planing done several years ago and was not put on any antibiotics (I don't think) after the procedure?  Of course, I wasn't taking any immunosupressant drugs at the time either.
