my dear Bear!...as you will discover i started your "Desert Island" thread i did not go first i am leaving that honor to either Jody or YOU (jody ya' did list your items but [don't laugh] i have no idea how to "paste" or cut them or whatever one does to move a paragraph to another spot. hmmm? wtf? 7 years of college, where does that really get a person? LOL
however, my inability to "copy/paste/cut" could be Freudian...no joke...i was a pre-school & kindergarten flunkie. a drop out. it's deep-seeded, it has to be.
ok Bear the nurse is punching in so get your checkbook out. (ah heck, no charge for you) i'll be Pro-Bono in hoping that my "for the good" will karma it's way back to me.
we have some edema going on eh? now...i need some info so i'd ask you my following questionnare if i were bedside:
1) is the swelling in both legs? or just on the leg that was operated?{left hip or right hip?}
2) can you feel the bottoms of your feet? toes?
3) is the entire leg/hip swollen? calf & ankles & foot?
4) can you see any redness on your skin?
5) is there a cast on?
6) were you given TEDS? (antithrombolititc stocking? very funny white socks.)
7) do you have a temp? (fever! is there a thermometer in the cave?)
back to your question. "what causes swelling after operations?" very good to ask.
the immediate factor that causes swelling is the fluids the surgeon has dripping in your IV bag. it's a pretty hefty bag, usually they'll hang 1000mL bag of lactated ringers (Ringers! tah! cute name ) and throughout your operation you'll most likely get at least 2 bags...plus they'll have you on continuous drip IV fluids throughout your hospital stay.
THAT'S A LOT OF WATER!
after the butcher has hacked through your body & puts it back together again...
the natural healing process starts to take place aaaaaaaaaah...
we take it you have a bit of a significant slice from the operation. so now what's going to happen is all the little cells that are flagged down by the Immune Police congregate and rally in & around your incision.
they'll have a protest = PAIN
they'll set a bon-fire = Heat
they'll have a BBQ = Granulation Tissue starts to form (aka a scab)
word will get out = WBC's of all creed&color repair the damage
it'll get overcrowded = edema!
so basically the swelling is a by product of injury. in your case, your surgery! tah-dah! the cells are really permeable & holding fluid.
edema is either local (a leg) or general {aka anasarca which is DANGEROUS meaning you're whole body is blown up}.
so what you're having to deal with now is pretty much, OK. that is of course if there is no infection from your operation.
elevation of the affected leg will help w/ your swelling. if the doc said it was alright to put an icebag near the cut that can help. cutting back on salt may also help too. but in all...only time will really make this go away.
whew! my paws hurt!
peace/love
