I have OA in my middle finger of my right hand and I believe that I am developing a Bouchard node.  Right now I rely on Tylonel Arthritis and Voltaren Gel to help alleviate the pain.  At first the Voltaren gel worked fairly well but it seems that this node is getting larger and getting more painful.  Is there anything that can be done surgically to help alleviate this or is surgery the last resort sort of thing?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I have had DIP and PIP joints on my fingers injected with steroids. That usually helps for a couple of months. I have also used splints to rest and relieve pain. I have had two surgeries for mucoid cyst removal and removal of bone spurs. I will not do it again unless there is absolutely no recourse. The left hand surgery was ok but the right hand was awful. I'm right handed and had a difficult time adjusting to not using it.

Hope you find some relief for the pain. Have you seen a hand surgeon yet and if so what does he/she recommend?

No I haven't seen the hand surgeon yet. I am just seeing whether or not surgery is even an option for these types of things. I asked my doc once if she could inject the finger because it was hurting so bad but she wouldn't do it. Her reasoning is that she wanted to treat the whole hand and not just the one finger. Now though the rest of my fingers are doing better except for that one middle one I may ask her again. Oh and I forgot that when I asked her, she had already injected the pointer finger of the left hand with steroid.
