Inflammatory Osteoarthritis And Plaquenil

Hi, all.  Just wondered if anyone here ever heard of inflammatory osteoarthritis. I  know I had never heard of it until my rheumatologist said that is what I have...along w/osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. So, he started me on 400 mg of Plaquenil a day and he just upped it to 600 mg a day. I take tramadol for pain. My left wrist is constantly swollen now. The MRI shows an inflammed nerve and "arthritis". I saw a rheumy ten years ago and he said I had mild RA. My blood tests are negative for RF but my CRP test was above normal.  As I said previously, my Rheumatologist now says it is inflammatory osteoarthrits.   I'm just a little confused. Why am I taking Plaquenil, which does help tremedously BTW, if I don't have RA or Lupus. Ideas?  Thanks!  V

P.S. I also take meds for high bp, asthma and high cholesterol. I can't take NSAIDs because the first rheum I saw years ago messed up my stomach when he told me to take 2400 mg of Ibuprofen for a year. Ai Yi Yi

Plaquenil reduces inflammation in many Rheumatic disorders, the mode of action is pretty complicated though so I shan't bore you with all the details, but basically it prevents your dendritic cells (these are messengers for your immune system, if you will) from interacting with your T-Cells (a special type of white blood cell which through a convoluted and boring process, causes inflammation when an infection is found, and these basically malfunction with inflammatory disorders). This "dendritic deactivation" (I made that phrase up) helps reduce your immune system being silly and inflaming your joints.

My sister was dx'd with Inflammatory Arthritis and Plaquenil sent her into remission some years ago now. (Though it's my personal opinion that she actually has Psoriatic Arthritis and a Rheumy of limited intellect!)

2.4g of Ibruprofen on a regular basis is bound to cause stomach problems, ouch! Have you dried diclofenac?

Hi Vannie,

I just get a DX of RA and my rheumy gave me plaquenil also. I have heard a lot of good things about it....but many have sad it upset their stomach but it does not seem to be bothering me much! I have not heard of inflammatory osteoarthritis...but that does not mean much.....all of this is pretty new to me! I hope you get to feeling better!

When I first started taking Plaquenil, it was a little hard on my stomach, but I just make sure I eat a banana or something before I take it, and I have no problems.

Sometimes, I think my rheumy is just sitting back waiting for something else to pop up. He has really helped me with medication, though. My NP thinks I have seronegative RA. Whatever it is, thank goodness for Plaquenil and Tramadol

Seronegative arthritis is arthritis that does not show up in any bloodwork, hence the seronegative.
Kinda like me, my arthritis did not ever show up on any bloodwork yet the mri's of my hands
shows arthritis damage, my rheumy also said that bloodwork can change from day to day
and that could be why it did not show up in the imflammatory markers in the bloodwork.
I hope this makes sense, but my rheumy also said he thinks mine is RA type arthritis...
you can google seronegative arthritis and maybe get better information.
Others here know more about seronegative arthritis and will come by.

I haven't heard of inflammatory osteoarthritis but I do have sero negative RA. My rheumy feels its all in the symptoms not the blood work! If its symmetrical inflammation of the joints normally associated with RA then she feels it is RA, sero negative or not. Hope this makes sense.

But heaps of people on here over the years I've been around rave about plaquenil. I didn't like it personally but if it suits you, it seems a good med to be on.

My first rhuemy put me on 5400 mgs of ibuprophen for two years-I had lousy insurance and it was cheap. It also worked/sort of.
My next rhuemy went through the roof and changed it immediately (of course she was 40 years younger than the first one-I think that matters).

Hi again, everyone.

I had to go off the Plaquenil due to an allergic reaction. My tongue started burning, and then I developed red little bumps on my tongue that were painful. So.......I can't have anymore Plauenil.

I was really upset about this because the Plaquenil has helped me SO much. I have been off it it a week and I have had a lot of pain. The doctor prescribed 4 mgs of prednisone a day and Tramadol.

The tramadol is helping a lot. I'm not sure about the prednisone.

My doctor wants to "think" about to do next. I have not been dx w/RA. Instead, he says it is Erosive Inflammatory Osteoarthritis, Fibromyalgia and Generalized OA.

We shall see. Thank you all for your replies.
