Do the biologics damage your liver like MTX and Arava can? Can you take a biologic without taking MTX or Arava?
Thanks,

not too sure on the Liver however they do have side effects you'd need to check up on, i was told i'd need to take MTX as it works better with it,i only took the Biologic for 3 months then stopped .

With biologics, the docs prefer you be on an immune suppressor to help boost the positive effects of the biologic and to avoid immunity or reactions. HOWEVER, there is also an increase of cancer and lymphoma's when taken together. There was a study on Remicade and Imuran taken in conjunction that it showed a higher incidents of cancer. I am not sure about
MTX in conjunction with a biologic but it stands to reason that the same will hold true.
But just like the MTX, you will still have frequent blood testing while on the biologic to make sure everything is fine.

Hey Vannie,
Can I make a suggestion?
If you are worried about
your liver enzymes be sure to drinky lots and lots of water daily. I believe every drug is processed through our livers- some are more toxic to them than others and I think when we are on multiple drugs it makes the liver work even harder. Think about
it- they warn you against taking Tylenol and Advil...we sometimes have to take those drugs along with MTX which is very toxic.
I would aim towards 64 oz. of water daily to help flush out the toxins. I drink 51 oz. a day and I'm not on MTX anymore.
Beware of herbal supplements that claim to flush the liver. Some are dangerous to take with MTX. Always ask your doctor before starting any supplements.
I wish you all the best.
