Im in the Us army stationed here in korea. I went to down the philippines to get married in october and caught a bug. Had diarehha and a fever for 3 days. When i came back to korea my knee was FILLED with fluid. The ER on post drained about 200 CC's of fluid and another 100CCs when i was transported to this big army hospital in seoul. The docs diagnosed it quick as reactive arthritis. Since then i have been on a mix of drugs. The army docs reffered me to Samsung Medical Center for a rheumatologist. He started me on Sulfasalazine 2 pills twice a day and 1000mg of Naproxen. Took 3 weeks and the swelling went down a little bit. Now seeing as the swelling hasnt gone down enough to his standards I was started on methotrexate 5 pills 1 time a week, sulfasalazine 4 pills a day, 1000mg of naproxen, 7.5mg of prendisone, folic and calcium supplements. Im hoping this clears up soon as im a soldier and this is really hurting me in my job. Im not trying to get discharged. Has anyone fully recovered from Reactive arthritis? Also the medication im taking has anyone taken it before and what results did you have?

I forgot to mention i have fluid in both knees and have had cortisone shots in both knees already and was fooled by the 3 day miracle relief of them. However being as active as I am i still can move just sometimes its painful. The rheumy last visit said by blood they can see the swelling went down from 7% to 5% by a inflammatory stain or something i dunno?

Stavy, I am sorry that I have not responded to your post till today. I have no experience with reactive arthritis except what I have read. From what I have read, most fully recover in about 3-6 months, But I know that everyone is different and recovers differently. I would think that if your swelling is lessening with each visit then you may well be on the road to mending.

Hi Stavy

I had reactive arthritis a few years ago which was caused by a bad gut infection. It is a very painful condition it took about 6 months for me to feel fully better and a mixture of steroid injections and naproxen which I still take. Most people do make a full recovery but a small % will get flare ups or turn into a chronic condition.

It sounds like you are being well cared for and the medication will help I found light exercise helped to ease the joints if you have any other questions then do post. I hope you feel better soon.

the problem is where im stationed none of that is available however the methotrexate and prednisone seem to be helping my blood tests yesterday showed my reactive proteins down from 5.77 to 3.30. Another month or so im hoping i should be in the clear.

I would imagine that you will get better within several months, whether it will re-occur is another matter.

I got reactive arthritis after having mumps at the age of 26 and since then have had about 5 major flare ups in the last 7 years.

Some people never have another flare up - you may be lucky. I was on prednisolone for 2 years along with many others which did eventually get rid of the symptoms, although I was in a wheelchair for 3 months. It was around 8 months until I was cleared. I am being put on methatroxate this week.

I am sure you will be better within a couple of months and I wish you all the best.

My reactive proteins went down to 2.25 down from 3.30 and I finally started to feel better until I noticed my ankle swells now and there fluid I just can't win with this disease the doc has me tapering with pred 5mg one day to 2.5mg the next day and repeat. Seems as if this crap wand to attack all my lower joints I'm praying to god this doesn't end my career

Hang in there man. I know it seems like you can't win with this stuff but just know you are not alone.

Doc has me on the strongest dose of humira and methotrexate and all same meds still. I feel 100% better after 2 doses of humira I've been able to run and do things I haven't been able to do in a year also I'm finally down to prednisone every other day
