HELP! METHOTREXATE FOR PSORIATIC ARTHRITIS

Hi I am a 25 year old and was just diagnosis with psoriatic arthritis and potentially rheumatoid .. they put me on methotrexate 10 mgs once a week and I am wondering what side effects any of you have experienced...and what I can expect. Any stories, advice or comments would be sooo helpful! Help please!!!! I've heard horrible things... shakehead

I have been diagnosed with probable Psoriatic Arthritis, was possibly RA, three or four years ago. This developed during treatment for Cancer. The two are NOT related so don't worry about that.

I've tried sulfasalazine, leflunomide and did not tolerate well. Also have had Steroids during worst flare ups which are brill but long term use is a no no if you can help it.

Taking the full dose of Paracetamol helps, ie 2 x 500mgs, every 4 hours up to a max of 4 times a day. Above this is very dangerous.

I am on 5mg methotrexate a week, as i did not cope very well with a higher dose. Symptoms when you first start can be nausea, headaches, sickness, for me it only lasts 5 hours after taking, there are numerous potential side effects and of course they vary from person to person. I prefer taking them later at night as i tend to be able to sleep through most of the side effects.

Pleas ask any other questions I will be willing to answer as best i can, I'm not an expert though, and therefore if you have any problems then speak to your consultant, doctor, specialist.

Well I hope you dont have any side effects, folic acid can help with side effects and if you do experience side effects make sure to keep your doctor posted on those and if your really worried you could possibly go to self injections of methotrexate.
Some abbreviations, methotrxate is mtx, diagnosised with, dx'd, just trying to be of help. Also you can check out www.drugs.com for a listing of side effects.

I'm on 25mg of MTX

the first few months: I would be tired and not in the mood to do much but sleep, that would last 3 days... hardly ate on the days I did it too, nausea was the worst so I'd take gravol 30 mins before poping the MTX and did that right  before going into bed try and sleep most of the side effect of. I'd suggest you do that too. But after awhile my body got use to it and now the only day is the day I take it that I have my 'movie day' I call it where I dont go out I don't cook dinner I just do nothing (even my dog is use to my down day he waits until my husband comes home to go out he wont ask me lol) so def the first few months might be a getting use to period but then once that's over with your set and only have 1 crappy day. AND since your only doing 10mg you might skip a lot of those side effects

Honestly this med was my mircale drug after all the meds I tried. However for me now cause I had stopped it then went back on it after 4 months it's no longer worker to it's fullest. Looking for a new med now
