MRI of hands anyone?

Has anyone here ever had an MRI of their hands? How long did the procedure take?
The place where I am supposed to have it done told me it takes 3 hours in the tube and 5 hours in the open MRI. 5 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This sounds outrageous to me. I am not going to sit in that tube for 3 hours. I'll have to wait to get 5 hours off from work to do that. What a pain in the butt!! If that's what I have to do though, I guess I'll have to do it I swear I get so darn tired of this mess, going to doctors, side effects of meds, I just don't know what to do I get so fed up.

Yes, my RA doctor took the mri's in his office, it can take awhile and you really can't do anything as need need to be still for them to get good images. You might want to ask many questions at this mri place, it's also a bit uncomfortable getting these done, takes about 20 to 25 minute for the hands then another 20 to 25 minute for the wrist, so should be about 2 hours, 3 hours sounds too long, maybe call around to different places and explain it's just for your hands and wrists, nothing else...I wonder if they have your waiting room time in there...call and ask them...

Thanks Chartreux, I was driving past a small business MRI that said standing MRI and called them. They said just an hour! I don't know what was up with that other place but 5 hours is too much. Thanks for the responses. I wonder what they'll say if it comes up negative???? Does that mean I don't have RA but something else??

Do not worry about the results, which can be hard...Do you have a follow up appointment scheduled with your doctor? that's when you talk about the results. Make sure your insurance will cover your tests at the place you called, do not put on any hand creams or lotions on the morning of your mri...hopefully it'll go very smoothly for you, my RA doctor has an mri machine in is office so I get mine done there, for early in the morning and then go out to lunch afters...Many well wishes and try not to panic yet about the results...keep us posted.

Well, I just wonder what the results will show. I am not too anxious about it. I just want answers.

Oh, I do know about wanting answers, took me years of trying to get a doctor to listen to me, kept telling doctors look, after my pregnancy, my feet swelled up, and seems I went from one bad doctor to the next, but now I have dx's I feel a bit vindicated and angry that they wasted my time not listening...hope you can get your answers soon, and at least you have good doctors looking out for you...many well wishes

Yes, I have pretty decent docs. Now, I am worried that maybe I should get the MRI done with contrast. Right now, I am on 10 mg of prednisone and some tramadol. It's a really good combination. I do feel like I have some fibromyalgia with the auto immune junk.

I wonder how long before your x-rays show RA after you have symptoms??? I have general swelling in my hands but not right at the joints. My joints in my feet hurt too.

It's good to wake up feeling well, that's for sure!!!!
