I had a bad knee flare very late December, my knee was so swollen you couldn't see the shape of the bone at all, and I couldn't straighten, bend, or put any weight on that leg. I went to a rheumatologist where I was visiting family (I live in DC but was in NJ when it happened!) and he drained th excess synovial fluid and gave me a cortisone shot. Two weeks after that my knee still hurts off and on, but I've been getting around just fine using a cane when it hurts.
I did see my regular rheumy when I got home, who switched me from sulfasalazine to methotrexate and made a follow up appointment for three weeks later to see how it's going.
I guess that's all a very long winded way of saying (a) I'm so sorry, knee pain is terrible and life-interfering and I wish you all the best and (b) do you see a rheumatologist? They might be better able to address this issue than an orthopedic doctor!
