What happens if I do not take the meds? Is the treatment worse then the disease?
I was managing it for many years without meds them major inflammation etc.

Hello:

You may have mild RA or another arthritis. You'd have to ask your Rheumy about that. I do not know.
I had read that even people with mild RA need to take meds.

I, and most others here, have moderate to severe RA. No, the medications are not worse than the disease.
If a person with severe or moderate RA do not use medications, then they will end up in severe pain, eroded joints, deformed joints or in a wheelchair unable to walk.

If the medications are causing a person intolerable side effects, then they can taper off of them. It is very unwise for anyone to not take medications for RA.

If you are looking to put off medications, consider the Autoimmune Paleo Diet (AIP) which has been reported to help some RA patients (and other AI patients). There have been no large studies, but they did a tiny one at Scripps in San Diego with IBD patients. In six weeks or so, those patients achieved over a 70% remission rate based on lab markers. Pretty amazing. This diet might help you identify possible dietary triggers for your RA.

While I have several autoimmune conditions, I do not have RA. My grandmother did long before modern medications. She experienced everything Ms.Ouchie described.
