I've always turned down cortisone injections due to the possible risks and the fact that it can only be done so often. My thought was that, getting diagnosed at 30 and having the rest of my life for it to progress, I should wait until it was really necessary. Now, nine years later, the tendons in my foot are breaking down because of the chronic inflammation and I'm looking at reconstructive surgery. However, my pain levels never reached a point where I felt like I was experiencing anything more than my normal aches and pains. If I had gotten shots when things first started getting worse, I might have been able to give the tendons a break to heal up, but now it's too late. So for those of you who do get cortisone shots, what signs tell you it's time? If I can't trust my pain levels to tell me when the inflammation is getting worse, what standard can I use?
