Don't you hate when someone blames you because you're sick?  "You're getting sick with this autoimmune stuff because you don't eat right.  You don't exercise enough.  You don't handle stress well.  You don't keep your house clean enough.  You don't leave the toilet seat down.  You don't put the cap back on the toothpaste."  Or my personal favorite, "God is punishing you."   Sorry, just had to rant for a bit.  No one close to me has ever told me that, but there have been a few mighter than thou types that don't hesitate!

Hey there elcamino! You doing all right? Yes, I totally agree with you, people say stuff like that all the time... My parents think the military did it to me... funny huh?

Hey Ducky.  I'm fine.  I was just p*&^d last night because one of my husband's friends has been telling him that I'm sick because I don't exercise enough (not like I used to) and I eat meat.  After my husband admitted this person had been telling him this stuff, I realized that's why he had been very concerned about my exercise habits the last 2 months or so.

The military, huh?  Are you part of some top secret military clinical trial study on ESP or something?  Maybe the drugs they've been sneaking in your dinner...?

I guess in the long run, we all have to laugh, don't we?

Actually, I get lots of exercist, eat well, keep my house very clean, and I am big on keeping the toilet seat down. I do eat meat, but I don't think that is it.

I think God is out after me, with all hell breaking loose in the world, I'm sure I'm his/her biggest problem eyes

Well, you don't exercise like you used to, 'cause you're in pain... Your husband's friends are ignorant. They have no idea with what you are dealing with, and your husband is caught in the middle. I just wish for 1 day, that all the "nay-sayers" could deal with our problems and see what tune they sing then...

Yeah... Mom and dad says I was perfectly healthy until I joined and now I've got a whole slew of things wrong... Even though AI Disease runs rampant on my mom's side of the family, it just didn't get her (yet)...

If we don't laugh, we'll go insane! Hang in there!

Craig, you crack my @$$ up... Ok, I don't exercise like I should, and I do eat meat... however, I do clean my house ALL THE TIME... Hubby thinks I'm OCD 'cause I have to have a neat house... I do put the lid on the toothpaste, as well as lower the seat when done going potty (all part of the OCD thing I guess)

Oh, I eat donuts and cookies too... :) But I did give up sodas! hee hee hee

tongue  geezaloo!  elcamino, you're so right on.  i hate that aspect about people.  why, out of all the people in the world, should we  who have AI diseases need to defend ourselves?  i think all those ignorant people need a sharp stick to the eye and also they can go shove it! hah!

my grandmother, bless her i love her dearly, thinks all my health issues will be solved.....BY EATING HAMBURGERS.

Jeez Erin, there's a bunch of people at my church that have told me if I take vitamins and antibiotics, all of my AI issues will disappear.  There are some capitalists out there making a fortune on these theories (e.g., The Maker's Diet).  Obviously there's something to diet and exercise and adequate rest, but for the most part, I think a lot of it's a bunch of bunk.

A couple of months ago my sister asked, "don't you think if you just lost 50 pounds you're problems would go away?"

I would have strangled her if I could have. I was fuming for days. The thing of it is, I KNOW she didn't ask out of her own concern. With all that I have been through these last 10 years she KNOWS the weight came on from immobility, she is asking because her (now) hubby planted it in her head. Granted, the weight is NOW making things worse and certainly isn't helping, but a lot of these problems were here when I was a size 3 in 1995.

Ugh. Now I'm angry. I guess I'll go read Craig's reply again to get a good laugh back! tongue

I just can't resist joining the party here. I have all kinds of people telling me that I will instantly get better if I will just start wearing magnets or drinking magostien juice. I have others give me the well you look like you are ok to me so why can't you do all that stuff you did a few years ago. Most of them mean well but it still drives me crazy. I have learned something here. I am going to start putting the toilet seat down. I had no idea that leaving it up was at the root of all my problems (my wife will be happy too). On a serious note those who say that God is punishing you have no understanding of how the Bible deals with these issues. I would remind them of two things. One, Paul had the "thorn in the flesh" that he asked god to take away three times and yet God did not heal him. Second, "Judge not lest ye be in fear of the judgment."

Yes, Mark, I try to keep in mind that most people who tell me these things really do mean well.  They are concerned and just want to help.  That being said, I still have a hard time believing that vitamins and diet will cure everything.  Jeez, if it was that simple, why are half of us on immunosuppressant drugs, and the other half are jabbing their legs with needles (or getting IV transfusions)?  And I don't buy the medical conspiracy theories.  But yes, please try leaving the toilet seat down.

CaMama--weight is a sensitive issue.  Granted, excess weight doesn't help any medical condition, but it does not cause AI disease.  I have a friend who absolutely believes that fibromyalgia is caused by morbid obesity.  Nevermind the fact that most people I know who have fibro are not overweight?  And if you feel your sister didn't ask out genuine concern for your welfare--well, isn't that nice?  I'm sure she probably has weight issues of her own...

yeah  I've just had an epiphany!  (Look out, Ducky is using big words!)  We can write our own book on cures for Arthritis.  You know, if all it takes is vitamins, exercise, magnets, pickle juice, drinking nona juice and/or magostien juice, a clean house, putting the toilet seat down, putting the cap on the toothpaste, replacing the toilet paper roll when it is empty, picking up our dirty clothes and putting them in the hamper... then we are SET!  We've got all we need right here to but this into remission and start running marathons!  yeah I don't know why we didn't think of it sooner!  eyes IGNORANCE... is bliss I guess... Hope you are all having a GREAT day!  Don't forget your pickle juice today! tongue

The whole topic really is pitifull, for someone to imply that your RA is your own darn fault is rather offensive to me.

Tell you what Elcamino, you send them out here to Durango for a week. If they can keep up with me on the bike, the trails, the river, whatever, I'll take the blame for my RA and everyone else's!
If they can't, they can shut up for a very long time.

tongue  Yes, we definitely need to buy stock in pickle juice, it is the next orange juice, mark my words!  yeah I've got the Today show lined up with a guest spot next week on Oprah, Erin, Mark, ElCamino, CaMama and Craig, I expect you all to be there with your bells on! 

 

But on a serious note... I'm with you Craig.  I have a pretty physically demanding job (aircraft maintenance is nothing to sneeze at), plus I run after 3 kids, a dog and a hubby, day in and day out... I go to the gym 3 - 4 times a week and I mountain bike 12 miles each Saturday... So yeah, if those so called "healthy know it all people" wanna walk a week in my shoes, HAVE AT IT!  nono Let's see how they do then!  Give them to me for a week, then I'll send them to you and we'll see who's flapping their jaws then!  devil This could be fun!  scool

I know where you are comeing from.My ex-husband use to tell me that he recented me because I was sick and could not work.Now I could see it if I was doing something by choice like drinking or takeing street drug's these are thing's you choose to do but a illness is something we do not ask for.It is so easy for people to critazise and don't have a clue as to what is going on.

oh gosh curley, how awful.  recent?!!  it's impossible to make people understand if they don't right off the start.  but lucky are we for those who actually do understand.

i actually admire my honey so much when he says, "I'm such a lucky person to be able to get up everyday, work, be physical, run, and do everythign everyday."  he realizes that "this" is no vacation. i would gladly trade places with ANYONE who didn't have RA or an AI or ANY DISEASE which interferes with life and work and mobility.

and heck!...i'de like to see some schmo on the street who thinks this way swallow pills like me! hah!....took a long time to lose that gag reflex alltogether! LOL tongue
