I did it--I went to my gyn doctor today and set up a surgical date for the tubal ligation. I thought I would be a bit upset after that, but I realized while I was driving home, that I truly feel with my two girls and wonderful husband that my family is complete. It also helped that doctor felt hormones were very wrong for me due to my "conditions" and meds. I refused to even consider an IUD. Only option left is sterilization. I told her husband didn't want to get snipped because his father died of prostrate cancer and a vasectomy would put him at risk for the same. She just laughed at me and asked me who told him that. It's a big myth. Evidently there was a study done a long time ago that drew a tenuous relationship between vasectomy and prostrate cancer. It was never corroborated. doctor who told husband that was wacked. Doctor just laughed again and said that now that seed was planted in my husband's head--he was never going to agree to a vasectomy.

here's a ripleys believe it or not.....

my mother at 42  having given birth to my sister, decided she didnt want any more kids, so when she gave birth they did at the time a tubal ligation.....at aged 48 she became pregnant....evidently it tied back together and she concevied at aged 48...sad to say she was not of good health and had to terminate it....docs says this was one in 300,000 chance of happening, she had it happen to her...i have not heard of this happening before or since this with my mom....she is now 78, if she had the  child at 48, she would have a 30 yr old child now at aged 78......

overseas women are having babies at aged 50-55 and one lady was 62 i think.....amazing

Ah, the life altering decisions we make, huh?  I too have had a tubal ligation.  I did mine when I was 26, right after the birth of my son.  I am EXTREMELY fertile and have absolutely NO PROBLEM getting pregnant, however, once I am pregnant I have a hard time staying that way.. both pregnancies I spent on bed rest... So... snip snip... and There you have it... I am on 33, and havne't had any problems since then.  When my doc did my tubal, he actual took out a section of the tubes and showed it too me, it was a good inch long or so... then the tied them and cauterized (sp?) them!  I should be good, if those grow back, I've got some Super Tubes! tongue

 

On a positive note, my hubby has had a vasectomy (we were both married previously and he had his done after the birth of his daughter).  The doc did the same thing, took out a section, stapled (instead of tied) and cauterized the ends... My hubby had his done in 1998, and all is good... Everything "works" as it should and no sign of prostate cancer!  :-)

We are a sterilization success story!  yeah You're right, you've got 2 wonderful girls and a great hubby, your life is complete.  You made the best decision for you!  Just wait til after you are all healed, the freedom you'll feel is amazing!  Being able to be spontaneous is GREAT!  Footloose and fancy free!  Woo-hoo!  tongue

Poca--my gyn doctor said that vasectomies do NOT cause prostrate cancer. It's most definitely a myth, and probably one that guys tell other guys so that they don't have to make the sacrifice.

Missie, my GYN doctor did say that a tubal ligation is not as effective as a vasectomy. She is planning on using clamps, so I don't think there's any tying involved? I think they are 98% effective, or something like that. I could get pregnant still. However, given my fertility problems, my husbands fertility problems, my age (38), and a tubal ligation, GYN doctor thinks it unlikely I would get pregnant at all. I met a first time triplet mom in my OB's waiting room one time. She was 43. Always worried about how she was going to fare. Pregnancy is not easy on any woman, but a triplet pregnant in a 43 year old?!?! I was 34 when I carried my twins, and I can tell you it was hard work.

Duck--glad to join the club. Did you get the tubal done after delivery of your son? Or did you have it done later? How long did it take you to recover? GYN doctor told me recovery was nothing like recovering from a c-section (that's how I delivered my girls); she recommended taking about a week off from work.

el, i agree with ducky stress free!

my hubby went to the vet 6 years ago,sry for my humor guys but that is how i see it~ but i must tell u i am glad to hear it is a myth about the cancer because the doctor sat us both down and he did tell us there is a correlation to this procedure and prostrate cancer. honest that came from the docs mouth cause i felt guilty then a bit for asking my hubby....... but obviously not guilty enough that i didnt talk him out of it. ~grin~ i always in the back of my mind worry about that so u have lifted a weight off my shoulders thanks!

i think the amount of kids u have is a personal choice, i know i have two daughters and i am fulfilled 100%! i too just had to say baby and i was pregnant, but pregnany for me horrible, toxemic (sp) and unable to deliver nightmares all dangerous for baby and me that i was done. i always wanted to adopt a foster child but never have. who knows now.... well enough about me good luck ~*yalinda
