Hip Pain

Hi all,
I usually post in the Prostate forum but feel I need to due some posting over here.
I have been having some lower back and left hip pain. My neurologist sent me for pelvis and hip X-ray’s due to tripling of my PSA and prostate symptoms. The X-ray’s showed two 1 cm sclerotic lesions on the hip, one left and one right. A bone scan was done Monday (11 Dec ’06) still wait on final report but first impression was no uptake, Negative scan. I like to know just what is a sclerotic lesion is, are they tumors. Also would a CT scan be in order? I see my Urologist tomorrow and have my yearly physical on the 28 Dec.

Thanks Linda, I can’t understand why a no show on the bone scans, myself. I’m going to talk this out with my Urologist today. The reason for the bone scan was my neurologist wanted to make sure I don’t have cancer that didn’t show on the prostate biopsy. BTW, I have the X-ray’s on CD and can see the lesions myself, all my Google’s showed that a lesion would show on a scan first not X-ray. I’m thinking could I have drunk too much water and flushed the dry out too soon or did someone look at the wrong scan. I’m going to push for the CT scan, I’m over due one on my kidney anyways. I should say when the pain came on last month it was so bad that it push me back down into my seat three times before I could stand up. This was worse then the pain from when I had my Laminectory.

I originally read your post, but my hip pain is not the same as yours...mine is on both sides (outer area) and is a deep pain that is felt all the time and I have a hard time sitting for extended periods of time (car rides etc) or sleeping.  Most often it is unbearable and I just want to crawl up the wall. 

 

I am not familiar with your condition and even in my most painful state my rheumy has never suggested an MRI of my hips.  Even though I cannot ride a bike, walk for long periods of time or drive like I used to without being in pain.

 

Hopefully someone will be able to relate and answer your post, since so many come here and read daily.  I wish you the best!

Thanks Erin, Elcamino & mom   I just got home from seeing my Urologist. He was late showing up, was stuck in surgery, my 3:30 PM appointment turn into a 5 PM. This worked out fine for me since we had time to talk and I was able to ask just what a sclerotic lesion in the right ilium is.   OK are we all ready for the answer?   It’s an Arthritis bone growth – Mine is most likely secondary to Paget’s bone disease which also explains the PSA spike. As PSA change can be a symptom of Paget’s bone disease.   I was told that ortho might be in my future,      I received the final bone scan report in today’s mail. It reads: 1.       Abnormal bone scan 2.       Abnormality- There is a small area of increase activity noted in the skull or brain. 3.       No abnormalities detected in the right ilium.     I have a vascular loop on the brain, first thought to be a brain aneurysm, this might be the activity noted.   As for nothing detected in the hip, pelvis, if a sclerotic lesion is 1 cm or less only 4% will be detected on a bone scan. Northeast US, I have some Canadian friends. Aye, spill the beans, post as you may on my brain activity.      I forgot to answer your question about what I take for pain. I take 50mg Tramadol PRN up to 4 a day as need; I mostly take two at bed time. If thing get very bad I have a TENS unit to use. The only thing is either me or my wife are always going to the doctors and can’t take the pills or use the TENS while I’m driving; well I guess I could and be just another Boston driver. HEHE. I also have Flexeril for spasm but it does nothing but puts me to sleep.
