Hi Tinabones. I know you must be miserable with your breath problems. Bad breath is common in Sjogren's because we produce little to no saliva. Saliva washes away bacteria that can cause bad breath. So, here are some tips from me:
Always chew gum or suck on candy that contain Xiletol. This is an artificial sweetner that makes Sjogren's patients salivate. Trident gum contains xiletol and I keep it with me always. You can also find xiletol candy online. Lemon drops can also stimulate salivation.
Never use a mouthwash that contains alcohol. Alcohol dries the mouth. My dentist (who works with Sjogren's patients has me use ACT mouthwash because it doesn't have alcohol and actually builds enamel.
Use Biotene toothpaste that also helps moisten your mouth. There is a medication called Numoisten that you can also try. Biotene also makes a gel called Oral Balance that I use a night before bedtime.
If you get thrush (like I do) have your doc prescribe Nystatin swish and spit. Use it often until the thrush is cured.
I don't know if this is helpful, but I keep floss picks around my house and think nothing of flossing in front of my family while watching TV.
Prednisone causes bad breath, but I don't think there's much you can do about it.
That's all I can think of, but I really hope it helps. Let us know how you're doing okay? Love, Butterflake
