Hello, this is my first post in this group. I have a list of symptoms that no one can seem to piece together. I want to ask about my eyes:

I've had dry eye syndrome for 16 years. They don't always bother me. For the last few months, I have been waking up and cannot open my eyes. Not bc they are crusted but bc they feel paralyzed. I try to open them and my eye lids don't move. It doesn't last long, I can get them moving after a few attempts at blinking. When I tell my doctors this, I think they think I'm nuts.

Does anyone here experience this?

I have never heard of anything like that.

One idea does come to mind -- maybe they are dry - too dry to "crust". You might try an "eye lubricant", eye drops without any medication in them, right before bedtime. There is even an "eye gel" - GenTeal Lubricant Eye Gel is one - that I often use at bedtime.

Thank you for responding. I'm just trying to gauge of it's dry eye related. It could be anything, I suppose. I actually do use lacrilube when my eyes feel gritty. I will use that tonight and see if it happens with that.

What type of eye doctor are you going to, you need an eye doctor you can trust and that will listen and you need to speak up about what happening and that it needs to be taken serious as you only have 1 set of eyes. This does sound scary! hope you can get help for it soon...

The eye doctor is an optometrist. I had some some relief with the dry eyes for a few weeks but it's coming back. We had 90 mm of rain the day my eyes started bothering me so I don't think it's related to allergies or caused by environmental irritants.

Your eye doctor needs to tests your eyes for dryness and you should try the Muro gel lubricating eye drops at night and use warm compressess... I just got put back on pred forte for my eye were crusting up again, if your eyes are crusty and feel like sandpaper then you probably have an eye infection going on and need an antibotic eye drop, I can't use the antibotic eye drop because of antibotic allergies, so I get placed on a steroid eye drop pred forte...but it works...
So, get into a good eye doctor as soon as possibe to treat this infection...

They aren't crusty at all. Come to think of it, I don't even have morning crusties any more. They feel horribly gritty but I'm not producing any goop.

It's really only any issue of waking up, my eyelids just won't open. Not because they are stuck shut with crust, but because I can't control them.

Try finding a better eye doctor, because its not good that you can't open your eyes, you can always go for a second opinion. Ask your primary doctor for a referral as soon as possible and I hope you can get a diagnosis that is treatable...keep us posted...
The gritty part is related to Sjogrens but the eyes not opening can be scary and not sure what is going on, but you need to be seen, by a doctor that will help.

My eyes were like that also. Sometimes when I would wake up I did not know if they would ever open! I had an eye exam but the doctor said she did not know what would cause this. It finally went away on its own. It has been almost a year now and it has not come back. It was like the muscles were stuck.
