Hi went to rhemotologist bc my hands , arms neck and shoulders were getting achey . Bloods came back all normal but an Ana titer of 1:1280 . The doc said to come back in 3 months . Should I be as nervous as I am ?

Did the rheumatologist order further blood testing for various types of ANAs?

Any time an ANA test comes back highly positive, further testing is warranted.

There are a bunch of possible reasons for the high ANAs.

Yes so far he said all other antibody tests were negative and I should come back in a couple of months . My skin is burning I wake up stiff and my neck and back are in so much pain . What else can it be ?

"Undifferentiated Connective Tissue Disease" typically has high ANAs with all other antibody tests being negative, so that's a possibility.

Can you get copies of all your test results? I always ask for copies of every test result.

Did they do urinalysis? A chest x-ray?

Urinalysis yes it came back with what he said was a UTI he put me on antibiotics butvwjen i showed it to my obgyn he said they didn’t even do a culture . I don’t think the urine had protein in it . No chest x ray requested yet by doctor . I went to a neurologist on my own and have an appt to do a cervical x Ray . I also just had my iud removed thinking that was the cause to all this coming so suddenly . I do feel like my breathing is off but i also have anxiety from all of this . My mouth has been dry lately as well but sogrens came back .2 . I have acid reflux and have also scheduled a endoscopy in June . I told the gastronerologist my Ana # and she said I didn’t need a colonoscopy . I am driving myself and my whole family nuts and I am so nervous i feel like checking myself into a hospital . How can I send you results do you have an email ? Thanks so much for answering back

Is this life threatening I’m so scared nobody understands my fear Ana is not a normal topic for anyone including doctors . Nobody knows anything about it . The rumotologist at my first visit told me nothing is wrong with you I’ll see you in 25 years and than I got an email a couple of days later saying the Ana was high . Don’t worry but we need additional labs which i did the next day . Ana was still the same number but all other tests came back Normal . He just called and told me to come back soon and he will re check nothing else . I’m not sure if my symptoms are being brought on by all the recent research bc I can’t put down google or if it’s just a coincidence that this is coming out so quickly . I’m beside myself already thinking it’s the end of my life .

You can post blood test results here if you want to.

Your rheumatologist should have spent more time with you, explaining test results, what they look for, what they mean, and going over all your symptoms with you.

If that doesn't happen at your next appointment, find a better rheumatologist who will work with you.

This is extremely unlikely to be life threatening. Most likely it means you might have a so-called 'autoimmune' disease like rheumatoid arthritis, sjogren's, scleroderma, undifferentiated connective tissue disease, myositis, or one of many others. If all your other antibody blood tests came back negative, then it's more likely to be undifferentiated connective tissue disease, which has features of several of the other autoimmune diseases but doesn't fully match the requirements for any of them.

Dry mouth and joint soreness from arthritis are both common symptoms with it.

Do you suffer from any of these ? What worry’s me is when you google the organ and lung issues come up and that really scares me . I think my anxiety makes it even worse . Can it also be linked to cancer or my other bloods would show that ? Thanks for helping me your the only one that is calming me down .

I was diagnosed with undifferentiated connective tissue disease based on high ANA titers, negative results for the other blood tests, plus positive for some symptoms.

My most recent ANA result was in between 1:640 and 1:1280. I've had it measured a few times over the years and the results have varied but have always been positive.

ANA levels do not correlate with symptom severity.

The thing with undifferentiated connective tissue disease - IF that is what you have - is that symptoms can vary dramatically from one person to the next. They can also change over time.

ANA doesn't have to mean anything. Generally it means they look for other tests and symptoms before deciding what, if anything, is wrong. It sounds like your Dr looked at everything and decided that nothing is currently presenting, so it's safe to check up on you in 3 months.

Lay off "Dr Google", and carry on as you have been. If you want to be proactive in taking care of yourself, I suggest making sure you get good restorative sleep, eat a healthy (low in processed carbs) diet, get moderate regular exercise (walking to the mailbox counts). This will help decrease your stress so you can determine if you symptoms are self-induced or not...

See the Dr in 3 months. You will be fine, and believe me, you will know if something serious is wrong before the 3 months is up!

True that having a positive result for ANAs doesn't always mean you have a disease. But the higher the ANA titer, the more likely you do. With a titer of 1:1280, the odds are very high that it means something.

Beave, Do you have Sjogren's or Lupus or MCTD or UCTD? Or Scleroderma or Auto-immune Hepatitis or even Polymyositis or Dermatomyositis? These are the diseases most often associated with a positive ANA, but the ANA number does NOT correlate to the presence or severity of a disease. A high ANA can even be the result of some medications! Many people without a disease, like over 20%, have a positive ANA, especially women over 65. An ANA measurement does not indicate the severity of a disease, you even mentioned that yourself above.

It wouldn't hurt to go to an infectious disease specialist and get a panel done
