Stelazine, Prozac, Thyroxine, Tramadol?? Help needed.

All, I have my firsy psych appt on Tues 13th Jan and I'm quite nevrous about it.

My mam and dad have had problems with 'mental illness' mainly 'depression' (or so it was diagnosed!) and my mum had a major psychotic episode with her having to be admitted to hospital 10 yrs ago.

Basically, my parents have told me nothing about their situations and it is really annoying as it may have led me to getting help sooner rather than later!

I've found out that my mam was on Stelazine and Zeroxat briefly.  She is now on Prozac, Tramadol and Thyroxine.  Are these any drugs that you guys recognise to treat bipolar??! I've looked them up on the internet and they are all used to treat bipolar in some way!! I wish they'd told me this sooner!!

Please can you let me know???

I'm hoping there's nothing else they're hiding from me!!

Okay, let's see. Prozac I know -- it's for depression of course. The others are foreign names so let me look em up and I'll get back to you...

Okay -- here's what I found,

Stelazine: anxiety or schizophrenia -- in this case probably anxiety.

Zeroxat: I couldn't find, it's not available in the US, but did find that it may be related to Paxil -- an anti-depressant

Tramadol: is a major pain killer, for fibromyalgia or restless leg syndrome

Thyroxine: is for thyroid problems.

I don't think your mom was bipolar. It sounds like she has depression. You should probably talk to her about it if you think it's relevant. And it is in someways. There is a genetic connection for mood disorders.

Thanks Serafena! I read that the also use Tramadol to treat Bipolar although they don't prescribe it specifically for it as its main use.

As for Thyroxine, someone can have BP and a thyroid problem that causes similar symptoms and if the thyroid problem is dealt with by the Thyroxine (which affects certain mutual receptors that are found in both conditions) then possibly a bipolar dx would go undiagnosed, despite the issues with depressive states that she has undergone?? Does that make sense? ie. the thyroxine helped fixed the problem associated with thyroid AND BP, the BP falls off the radar and the depression is dealt with as a separate issue by the doctors???

The thing is -- I have bipolar and thyroid problems -- the bipolar WON'T go away after you deal with the thyroid. It wouldn't go unnoticed if that were truly the problem. The similarities are between depression and and thyroid issues primarily, and when I was life-threateningly depressed, thyroid was one of the first things they checked -- and caught.

Ah, I see! Although it would treat similar symptoms caused by thyroid it wouldn't treat similar bipolar symptoms?

So, if my family do suffer from mood disorders of whatever sort do they have to have bipolar for me to be bipolar?

Right. exactly. So the thyroid problems got dealt with -- my hair stopped falling out, my depression lifted a little -- but obviously I'm still bipolar.

No, you're family doesn't have to have bipolar for you to be bipolar. David Miklowitz, in the Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide, says that "The rate of mood disorder (major depression, dysthymia, or bipolar disorder) among first-degree relatives (siblings, parents, and children) of bipolar persons averages about 20%... On average, about 8% of a person's first degree relatives have bipolar disorder, and about 12% have major depressive episodes without mania or hypomania. These numbers are averages: Some people have many more relatives who have mood disorders and some have fewer."

Thanks again. Apologies for blabbering on. I guess I'm just nervous and anxious about my appt next week and annoyed that my family haven't told me everything about their conditions until now!

Also, I feel relatively fine today compared to the last 6 weeks where I've really struggled with depression AND racing thoughts at times. i just dont know whats going on! Maybe Im imagining it all? Maybe i just shouldnt waste the docs time next week. ??????

No no no...

Don't go there. You go to that doc appt and get evaluated. It'll be good for you. And even if you're feeling better now, tell him what you were feeling before. Remember the swinging is part of the problem. Your goal is to be stable. So many bipolars go off their doctors and meds cos they think they're better. But don't do it. I'll come get you!

Ok. Ill go. It was so weird this mood change. More so than all the others. It was more intense. The depression was heavy although i wasnt suicidal i thought about death ie. when i was driving i thought what if i drove at 150mph and rammed into the side of the road! not that i think id do it! I dont know how much of it was me making myself think like that or whether it was my condition??! the rapid thoughts were new to me too as was the release (like a drug fix) when i was leaving the depression approaching 'normal'...it was like taking morphine!!!!

Do any of those feelings/experiences ive just mentioned above about 'the hit' when coming back from a depression like a shot in the arm or a dose of morphine??! It felt like it could be quite addictive??!

THE CORRECT Name is: Seroxat .... not Zeroxat!

I used to take them (Seroxat) but now I replaced them with ZOLOFT( ZOLOFT is the new PROZAC)

 

My father is over 70 years old and takes Seroxat and he is happy!

Stelazine is an old medicine like Haldol and Anaframil but all are very good medicines except the very good Anaframil which add on you many kilos!

 

I used to take all the above some years ago.

Basically, they are very helpful.

My father has depression and me I have OCD and anxiety. I do not have a sychophrenia OR a bipolar disorter either! Those medicines are use for many situations regardless is if they could treat for example anxiety and they were created to treat sychophrenia! ALL MEDICINES HAVING COMMON USE!

When I started with Stelazine I was in a very bad situation. I was taking also XANAX with EFEXOR and with Stelazine and after when I was getting better my doctor stop gradually XANAX and Stelazine and we replaced them with ZYPREXA.

Now, I take ZOLOFT instead of EFEXOR (because EFEXOR had changed my metabolism and I took many kilos). Also ZYPREXA caused damage to my metabolism and my doctor replaced them with SEROQUEL.

Absolutely,

The release after a depression is totally a rush. It feels like the sun is rising for the first time in years. It feels like waking up. Unfortunately for me, it also led to hypomania, so that was no good, but it was an amazing feeling for about 2 weeks.

My 'release' from the 4 week depression phase hasn't seemed to induce mania in me. It was just like a euphoric release that hit me like a dose of morphine and alleviated the worst ofthe depression. I feel 'normal'/down at the moment but I have this sense that something is round the corner that's gonna hit me, whether its down again or up I've no idea! Does this sound familiar to anyone? Serafena?

Hey Mackem,

BP Gemini here.  I can definitely relate to having racing thoughts and thinking about destructive things that I would never follow through on, that is BP for me.  I stopped my meds again and am in the cellar so to speak, but I am going back on them this week-end and try to stay consistant with it.  Yes, when depression lifts it is like color comes back into your world again and since I am usually more manic I love me some hypomania!  But as we all know, that is no good either.  Please go to your appointment and be happy that you are smart enough to get some help no matter what the diagnosis is.  I fooled myself and everybody for so long that nothing was wrong with me but it finally got to a point that my family got involved (spouse, children) because they knew better than I did that something was not right.

I was raised in a very strict household and my parents never took me for help even though my behavior as a teenager was screaming that something was wrong.  I think my mother suffered from depression but here again, you just did not talk about these things.  Do not waste precious time and energy worrying about what they have told you or not.  It is not going to change anything.  Just get yourself well and surround yourself with caring people.

Good luck, i will be thinking about you and let us know how your Doc visit goes.  We all care.

I find that I can be relatively ok/normal for some part of the day and then all of a sudden my head starts racing and i feel really depressed and burst into tears! Proper sobbing! My head swims with all these thoughts at the same time and its like I want to rip my brain out of my head to stop it all! When I've been like this its almost like theres some sort of energy that just wants to burst out of me or make my body convulse!

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Id really appreciate knowing if anybody ever feels a similar way? Serafena?

Yes  Mackem,

My thoughts race constantly.  I can hardly turn my mind off to go to sleep!  I have started back on my risperdal and it is a little better, but the best part is that I am in a good mood, not manic, just a good balanced mood.  I went off this med a few weeks ago because the dosage was too high and it was making me extremely aggitated, so I stopped and restarted at a lower dose and so far so good.  Really I will be thinking about you tomorrow and will send good and positive vibes your way.  When I was on seroquel, it really quieted my mind down but I have diabetes in my family and I gained alot of weight really fast and did not feel well so I had to go off of it.  Just remember if they put you on meds it can take some time before you hit the right mix for you.  Also, you cannot just take a pill and be better, you have to work at it thru exercise and proper diet and finding your balance in life.  Nothing worth having is ever easy, you have to do the work!

Thanks BP Gemini! :-)    I dont feel too bad today but when it hits me it hits me! My thought arent racing today! Is that normal for it to be on/off? Sat night was deadful I just wanted to pull my brain out of my head and sat down on the sofa liek a little child and sobbed my eyes out! I wanted to scream! Then I was just exhausted and numb and wanted to sleep.  As it turn out I didnt sleep very well and was awake after 2 hours and then pretty much every hour after that!

Ill let you know how tomorrow goes!
