Family Member Homicidal

My sister has Bipolar, and to a large degree. She refuses help because she believes everyone is out to destroy her. She blames her family and threatens homicide. She also threatens suicide. My mom pushed to have her admitted to a safe place. The judge denied this and considered the problem a "family matter." My sister hasn't committed a crime, and so the police cannot do anything. But all of us, her family, feel she will execute disaster if her disorder goes untreated. Insurance won't pay for further treatment and, incredibly, is forcing her to pay for her hospitalization last year. We are at a loss. My parents gave her their retirement home, and she is destroying it. She does not have the ability to control herself, and those in charge refuse take responsibility. Please someone help...

Hi Ecb,

If she threatens suicide or homicide again and you believe she is serious, take her to the emergency room. The only way one can be "committed" is if they are a danger to themselves or others. You'll need to convince a doctor that that is the case. If she threatens anyone (including herself) physically, DO NOT HESITATE to call the police. Again, if necessary, they will take her to the hospital for observation.

Get aggressive about not putting up with her mood swings or anti-social behavior. She needs help, and you are her only advocates.

Thanks everyone. I sure hope the police listen and understand the severity of her condition. She is very stable right now, but as in the past, the stability lasts but for a few weeks, then Boom.
